THE FIRST SOUND OF SUMMER So Ac on Ads’ Julie was celebra ng her birthday over the weekend and had a wonderful me, but missed just one thing.

“I usually hear the first Piet-My-Vrou of summer on my birthday or just before it, but I haven’t this year.”

Anne of Ac on Ads heard one at Hunter’s Home the next day and sent her a recording, but Julie s ll has not heard one at Noetzie. Its proper name is red-chested cuckoo.

This reminded me of the compe on that I found amusing when I worked at The Star in Johannesburg. One of the assistant editors used to write about hearing the first Piet-My-Vrou every year. This started readers wri ng in to say that they had already heard it four days earlier or whatever, so an annual compe on started in the paper. (You know how compe ve bird watchers are!)

I love the sound of the Piet-My-Vrou because it is one of the happy sounds of summer. I have seen the bird only once, in a pine tree in a planta on in Mpumalanga. It took three of us about 20 minutes to spot him. O en heard but seldom seen because they are secre ve.

They need to be secre ve because they are a bit skelm. Instead of laying their eggs in a nest they built themselves, they sneak up on the nests of other birds, lay their big fat egg with the others already there, and then sneak off, leaving the other bird parents to raise their cuckoo chick. That is why the Piet-My-Vrou, like many other cuckoos, is called a “brood parasite”.

The Piet-My-Vrou usually chooses nests of much smaller birds, especially robin-chats and wagtails.

Ornithologists call these birds the “hosts”, but it seems they are hosts only to gatecrashers. And worse, they can’t even tell the gatecrasher from their own family, so they are truly suckered.

The Piet-My-Vrou doesn’t sneak just one egg into another bird’s nest, but lays about 20 eggs in 20 different nests each breeding season.

The cuckoo egg incubates faster than the robin-chat or wagtail eggs, and when the cuckoo hatches, it o en kicks out the eggs that the robin-chat or wagtail “host” had laid.

It seems strange that these birds cannot tell that the cuckoo chick is not their own, but apparently they can’t.

It grows to about three mes the size of its host parents.

Man, you have to see photographs of a li le wagtail mom stretching up to pop a caterpillar into the gaping mouth of an enormous cuckoo chick. They must work over me to keep it fed.

So ja, as they say the Piet-My-Vrou is one of the cheats of the bird world. I s ll love its song.

Strangely enough, although it is a diurnal bird, you quite o en hear it sing in the middle of the night.

“Well, now I know why,” said one of Julie’s friends, a er we had been cha ng about the Piet-My-Vrou.

“It sings at night because it is out jolling. It has le all its kids for other birds to look a er, and now it is free to jol and keep everyone else awake!”
