AN INSPIRING TEACHER CAN LIGHT THE WORLD I love reading those odd snippets that fall into my inbox.

This morning I discovered that on 16th September 1878 - 143 years ago today - Thomas Edison announced that he had made the first commercially successful electric lamp.

“I have it now! With the process I have just discovered I can produce a thousand from one machine.”

Imagine knowing your inven on could light up the world.

But here’s a thing: Edison was apparently not the inventor of the electric light bulb itself, although we all learned that at school.

Others had done so before him, and Edison built on those earlier inven ons. He patented the first commercially successful light bulb in 1879.

As well as being an inventor, he was an astute businessman. He founded a research laboratory and 14 companies, including General Electric, which is s ll one of the world’s largest companies today.

He had an entrepreneurial spirit from a young age, selling sweets and newspapers on the trains around Detroit, and made $50 profit a week. Most of this he spent on equipment for his scien fic experiments.

He became a telegraph operator on the US railways and later at a news agency. The telegraph was the “internet” of those days, the way one got news from around the world.

Edison had apparently especially asked to work the less busy night shi at the news agency, as it would give him more opportunity to do his experiments on the sly. Not such a good idea. He accidently spilled sulphuric acid onto the floor that leaked through the floorboards onto his boss’s desk. He was fired.

He was a remarkable man, Edison. I learned only today that he had also invented the phonograph in 1877, the ancestor of the record player. Incredible for a man who had become completely deaf in one ear at 12, and was par ally deaf in the other ear, apparently the result of scarlet fever as a child. Don’t know if it is true, but they say Edison “heard” music from a piano by bi ng down on the wood and absorbing the sound waves into his skull.

Edison also invented the movie camera. Just think of the effect those three inven ons had on the modern world: electric lights, recorded music and movies.

Here is something that ckled me. This guy who is labeled the greatest inventor in the US went to school only for a few months.

Apparently a teacher had told his mother that Edison was “addled” – a euphemism at the me for being mentally ill. His angry mother, Nancy Ellio , decided to teach him at home.

In retrospect it was a blessing. Edison later said his mother had been “the making of me”, as she had always encouraged and inspired him to follow his passions.

William Arthur Ward once said: “The mediocre teacher tells.

The good teacher explains. The superior teacher demonstrates.

The great teacher inspires.”

Edison was lucky to have his mother as his teacher.

And so is the rest of the world.

Older Stepping Stones families will be saddened to hear that SARAH LAMINIE, retired Red Cross assistant, passed away last weekend. Sarah was clearly loved by the children, for her patience and kindness.

She was a respected member of the teaching team at the school for around 20 years.
