A WHALE TALE Southern right whale numbers seem to be declining on our coast, which is sad, but today I want to tell you a happy whale tale.

You may have heard of the late Peter Esterhuizen of Witsand, also known as The Whale Induna.

I met him years ago a er I had wri en a newspaper ar cle about whales. He phoned and said: “Tell me, how close have you been to a whale?”

I told him I had only seen them from the shore.

“Well, I will take you out on my boat and I tell you, whales will come right up to us.”

I did not really believe him, but went to check it out.

Peter ran a fishing business in Witsand, taking anglers out to sea.

“Some mes there are so many whales in the winter months it takes ages to get out because you have to go slowly and dodge them.”

We chugged out of the Breede River mouth in his boat. He cut the engine and waited.

Within a few minutes a whale popped up in the distance.

Sure enough, it swam towards the boat. I could not believe it. It came so close, turned sideways and looked at me.

Have you ever looked a whale in the eye? It is an unforge able experience. I got goose bumps.

Legally you are not allowed closer than 300m to a whale without a permit, and if a whale approaches you must move away - which we did.

But there were so many that wherever we motored we really did have to dodge them.

Then Peter told me a story. He said a couple had asked if he would take them and their daughter out to see whales. Their daughter was mentally disabled and had not spoken since birth.

He agreed. The girl sat silent and s ll next to her parents.

Peter cut the engine and they waited. Soon a whale appeared in the distance. The parents were excited and pointed it out to their daughter. She was unresponsive.

The whale disappeared beneath the water and they sat bobbing in silence.

The next thing there was a sudden whoosh of water as the whale appeared right next to the boat. The girl got up, went over and stared at the huge creature. It was so close Peter said if he had stretched out he could have touched it.

“She stared and the whale stared back. Then she turned to her parents with her face beaming, and said: ‘Love.’

“Her parents couldn’t believe it. It was the first word she ever said. They had tears streaming down their faces. I must admit, I was blubbing a bit too.”

They got off the boat thanking Peter profusely.

He never heard from them again, so never knew if she had ever spoken again, but he treasured that memory.

I love that story. We will never know why that experience caused her to u er her first word, but I suppose it is part of what we have all felt from me to me: the healing power of nature.
