CORAL REEFS AND ARTIFICIAL CLOUDS When we were backpacking in the Sinai many years ago, we camped on the beach at a place called Nuweiba. Someone had lent me goggles and said I should check out the coral reefs. I swam out, donned my goggles and checked under the sea. Just sand.

The sea was so calm I swam quite far out. I thought I might as well check underwater again. Oh my word! It was like an underwater documentary, a mass of brilliantly coloured corals, seaweeds, anemones and fish. I could not quite believe it.

Enormous brain corals; turquoise, pink and orange striped fish; red, yellow, blue and mauve corals. It was pure magic. I remember my back ge ng so sunburnt because I could not tear myself away.

So it has been really distressing to read about coral reefs dying because of climate change. Warmer oceans are becoming acidic because of all the carbon dioxide that the oceans absorb. Both are bad news for reefs.

I was cha ng to someone about how horrible it was, and they said what did it really ma er.

Well, it does. Although reefs take up less than 0.2% of the ocean bed, they are one of the most valuable ecosystems on Earth and support more species than any other marine environment: 4,000 species of fish and 800 species of corals just for starters. Some people call them the “tropical forests of the ocean.” Over 500 million people depend on coral reefs for food and jobs, and 25% of all marine life depends on reefs.

Not only that, but the es mated monetary value of coral reefs is $375 billion a year, mostly because of fishing and tourism, as well as the protec on the 150 000 km of reefs provide to towns and ci es globally by cu ng wave energy by 97%.

So I was intrigued to read about an experiment last week that scien sts hope may help protect the Great Barrier Reef.

It is all about making clouds brighter so they reflect more sunlight and create shade to cool the reefs below. The researchers modified a ferry, fi ng it with 320 nozzles that spray out a mist of seawater. The idea is that the mist floats upwards and mingles with the low-lying clouds, making them reflect more sunlight.

So far they have carried out one trial. The mist went higher than expected.

S ll experimental, and if it succeeds there would have to be many mis ng sta ons along the reef to help cool it. The aim is not to provide a permanent solu on, but to buy me for coral reefs to survive while the world gets down to slashing greenhouse gas emissions.

The scien st driving this, Daniel Harrison, said in the journal Nature: “There are only so many clouds available, and only so much you can do to brighten them. Eventually climate change just overwhelms things.”

I hope his project succeeds and does buy me for the coral reefs.

As Barack Obama said: “We are the first genera on to feel the effect of climate change and the last genera on who can do something about it.”
