NAPIER’S MOERSE FARM STALL I visited friends in Napier at the weekend.

As we sat on the stoep drinking coffee and watching the sunrise, I was looking forward to the bustle of the Saturday Napier Village Market. But it never really happened.

There was a stall selling vegetables, another selling bread, a restaurant with homemade preserves, and local musicians jamming at Blue House Books – but that was about it.

A far cry from the vibrant Napier Village Market I had enjoyed in November, where people sold all sorts of things from cakes and honey to funky home made jewellery, from plants to po ery, clothes to spring rolls, and masses of homemade jams, curried beans etc. It was buzzing with a lovely village vibe.

I asked some locals this weekend what had happened to the market, but they were not sure. Seems a shame.

But that a ernoon my host Liane made up for it. She took us to Napier’s Moerse Restaurant & Plaasstal. What a deligh ul place!

Just the name is enough to make one smile.

It had signs outside about the moerse nice things on sale, including a “moerse breakfast”, and inside you could get all the lekker pla elandse homemade goods from rusks to melktert.

Manie and Lae a Kriel started it in 1999. I cha ed to Lae a about it.

Interes ngly, Manie had been a bank manger all his life.

“Then when he was posted to Napier, he decided he had had enough of the bank,” Lae a said.

The bank’s loss was Napier’s gain, and the Moerse Restaurant & Plaasstal was born. At first they sold “Moerse Pies” and later expanded to “Flippen Lekker Viskoekies” and “Warm, Sexy Bread”.

They built it up from scratch with hard work and good produce.

“It did be er when we started because Napier didn’t have many businesses then, so you have to adapt or die,” she said.

One adap on was her son E enne and his wife, Anneline, joining the business and expanding it to include second hand books, the “Tip of Africa” nursery and serving moerse meals.

I bought a melktert and took it to the guy on the ll. Turns out that was Manie himself.

“One milk tart,” I said, poin ng to the brown paper bag.

He looked at me and said: “Melktert.”

I quickly changed to Afrikaans: “Ja, melktert.”

He rang it up and said: “My vrou het my met ‘n melktert gevang.

Dit was 50 jaar gelede – en ek is nog hier.” (My wife ensnared me with a milk tart. That was 50 years ago – and I’m s ll here.)

Lae a chuckled when I told her.

“Yes, we’ve been married 50 years.”

I came away with a delicious milk tart, but also with something else: admira on for people who have the ini a ve, imagina on and drive to do things just a li le bit differently to make their venture a li le bit more successful.

I also admire people who can change their lifestyles so totally – from banker to moerse pie-maker.

Makes me think of that bumper s cker: “You are always one decision away from a totally different life.”
