Did any of you see the story about the 28,000-year-old lion cub that was discovered buried in Siberia, a relic of the last Ice Age? Astonishing preserva on. You can even see its ny whiskers.

It looks a bit like one of those furry toys that has lost its stuffing.

It was found in 2018 by mammoth tusk hunters, but made the news last week a er the publica on of the scien sts’ findings about it.

They called her Sparta, and she was about two months old when she died.

I did not even know that lions had once lived in Siberia, but apparently they occurred throughout Asia and Europe during the last Ice Age, living alongside woolly mammoths. They were called cave lions and I suddenly remembered reading about them in that wonderful novel Clan of the Cave Bear.

The scien sts don’t know how the cub died, but say her damaged skull and dislocated ribs may be the result of an accident, like a fall into a crack in the ice. She quickly became mummified and her fur, skin, bones and organs were preserved for 28,000 years.

Researchers hope to find remains of the mother’s milk in the cub, which could tell them what the lioness had fed on.

An amazing window into the past.

As cuddly as lion cubs look, I know from experience that they have claws to be reckoned with.

I was lucky enough to hold a lion cub once, and feed it with a bo le. But like ki ens, they like to “knead” you when they drink and my hands were covered in scratches.

The cub was one of two that were found in Umfolozi Game Reserve a er a ranger had been forced to shoot their mother.

He was taking people on a hiking trail when the lioness burst from the bushes and charged.

He fired twice, the second shot killing her.

She had been trying to protect her babies, which they then found hidden in the bush.

Officials of what was then the Natal Parks Board wanted to leave the cubs and let nature take its course, but once the story got out there was a big call from the public to save them.

A er a big hoo-ha, a Durban woman who ran an animal rehabilita on centre was allowed to raise them – and that is where I was able to hold them.

The cubs grew into young adults, and the authori es said they could no longer be kept in the suburbs, and found a farm in the Free State where they could be released.

The tale had a sad ending. They were drugged for the journey, and never woke up.

I met the ranger not long a er he had shot the lioness. He was s ll limping from where she had clawed him in her death throes.

He told us the story, and then paused: “You know, the news reports said I first fired a warning shot and when that didn’t stop her, I shot to kill.

“That’s not true. The first shot I just missed.”
