Strange things can happen when you are in the bush. One such thing happened to me when we were on a bushveld trail. No lavatories, of course, but we had been instructed how to manage our poo: take a trowel and matches, dig a hole, do your stuff, cover it and burn the loo paper.

One morning I was crouched down answering the call of nature when I felt a thud on my back. I looked over my shoulder and to my surprise I saw it was a dung beetle. He had got wind of what I was up to and came flying at speed and whacked into my back.

I was a li le alarmed to see him scu le beneath me and start rolling a dung ball.

I finished up quickly, then watched, fascinated. Here was nature’s “sewerage system” at work as it had been for thousands of years.

What sparked this memory was an email this week about research that shows how light pollu on from all our electric lights affects dung beetles’ ability to orientate themselves.

Dung beetles are intriguing insects. There are around 6,000 different species found all over the world. They find fresh dung by their acute sense of smell, and they both feed on it and lay their eggs in it.

Once they have rolled a dung ball, they want to get it away from the pile of poo quickly because there are other dung beetles that are compe ng with them. They have been known to fight over a dung ball.

To make an effec ve get-away, they need to keep in a straight line and not circle back to the poo. Not so easy when you have your head down, pushing the dung ball with your back legs.

How do they orientate themselves? Researchers discovered that dung beetles have an internal compass that uses both the sun and the wind to navigate their straight lines. Even more fascina ng is that they found that nocturnal dung beetles use the light from the Milky Way to navigate. How amazing is that! Like sailors of old.

Now Science Daily reports that for the first me researchers have proved that light pollu on from urban centres makes it difficult for the nocturnal dung beetles to use the night sky to navigate, because the reflected glow in the night sky obscures the Milky Way. The beetles become completely disorientated.

But the problem goes further than dung beetles. Researchers say that light pollu on could “drama cally hinder the vital nightme journeys” of many other species of insects, birds and mammals that rely on the night sky for migra on. Sad, isn’t it?

But there is a (gentle) light on the horizon: The Interna onal Dark Sky Associa on. They are working all over the world to try to change public policies on outdoor ligh ng to cut light pollu on. This is not only for the benefit of wildlife, but also cuts down on energy use.

More strength to them! Perhaps one day we will be able to look up from a city and s ll see the stars.

And dung beetles will not loose their way.

She visited all but three of SA’s na onal parks and loved to camp in wilderness se ngs. She knew much about, and had a passion for birdlife.

She invented a foolproof method for saving birds from flying into windows.

She sewed lovely quilts.

She baked the best Sco sh shortbread ever and so charmingly hosted Burns’ Suppers that a wai ng list was established.

But she notched up high profile invita ons of her own. Barbara Bush invited Sheila to a party on the lawns of the White House. And in Ghana she was among a very select group who were invited aboard the visi ng Royal Yacht, Britannia.

Sheila was beau ful in every sense of the word and hers was a life well lived.
