APPLE-EATING DOGGIE Last week I spent a wonderful week dog-si ng at an apple farm in Elgin.

It was icy cold with lashing rain and we shivered with the rest of the country, but when the sun came out there were rainbows over the hills and snow on the distant mountains.

The dog was a bullmas ff with a sweet nature, and to my amazement she loved apples. When we went for a walk through the dormant orchards she suddenly disappeared. We found her lying under the trees munching wind-fallen apples. I guess she learned as a puppy how good they were.

Gazing over the misty orchards one morning, I wondered what the future was for this farming region. The apple industry had a good harvest this year, but a few years ago they were ba ling the “Day Zero” drought and had to abandon a quarter of their orchards because the authori es had cut their irriga on water by 60%.

Cape Town had its water cut by 45%.

Now that the drought has broken, it is easy to forget those hard mes when Capetonians’ ra on was 50 litres a person a day.

There have always been droughts, but with rising global temperatures will there come a me when it is not viable to grow deciduous fruit in Elgin?

We had the impact of global hea ng brought home to us recently with the record-breaking high temperatures in North America that caused over 200 deaths, and the devasta ng floods in Germany, Belgium and China that swept away houses, roads and hundreds of people.

I saw a German woman on television say she had never expected floods like this.

“In poor countries, yes, but not in Germany.”

I smiled because I understood her comment. We think if we have excellent infrastructure, efficient administra on, and top class weather forecasts, we can be protected from the worst of the weather, but the dreadful impact of the extreme weather in three of the most developed countries – Germany, Canada and the US – shows that global climate change can affect any country.

We need to change our lifestyles, of course, but mostly we carry on in the same old way.

Some things we can’t change as individuals, like Eskom burning coal for electricity. But how many of us try to cut our daily carbon emissions? For instance, one small ac on can have massive carbon savings if we all did it: turn our hot water geysers down to 60°C and switch them on only at certain mes a day. Some may say: “Oh, what difference will that make?” but every carbon saving makes a difference.

Greta Thunberg was once told to say “posi ve things” about climate change to “inspire people”. She replied: “If there are no posi ve things to tell, then what should we do? Should we spread false hope? We have to tell the truth.”

The bullmas ff munching apples in the orchards will not live long enough to see climate change get worse, but many of you reading this will.

And in years to come we may all look back on what we should have done differently.
