PAT HENDERSON: A LIFE LIVED TO THE FULL Some people make an impression at the first mee ng. Others make an impression over many years.

Such was Pat Henderson, who died on Saturday at the age of 93.

Although she was born and lived most of her life in Zimbabwe, she and her husband Alan re red to Knysna and many people here will remember her.

I met Pat when I was a schoolgirl a er she married Alan Henderson, who owned Noetzie Castle. Our families became firm friends.

What impressed us about Pat ini ally was how enormously capable she was on the domes c front. She was a brilliant cook, sewed beau fully, created stunning gardens, was a wonderful hostess and ran the Noetzie household in her stride although she never knew how many people would turn up for a meal. And she was always immaculately dressed.

Later we were impressed that Pat could also drive a 4x4 in the bush, shoot, butcher a carcass and fly a plane.

She and Alan were taught to fly by the celebrated pilot Jim Davis in George in the mid 1970s.

She told me that when Alan had started flying, she said to him: “You know Al, I should learn too, because if something goes wrong with you up here, what will we do?”

Alan needed no more convincing – and she turned out to be a very good pilot. They had a Piper Cherokee 235 Dakota, and Pat clocked up many hours flying, and they flew from Zimbabwe to Knysna frequently.

They loved to travel, and went all over the world.

But life was not always easy for Pat. She was born in Gadoma in Zimbabwe on 28 June 1928. She married Shorty Ryan when she was 18 and they lived in Bellingwe and later Victoria Falls. Pat adored Shorty, but tragically, he died young. At 38 Pat found herself a widow with five children.

When I listened to Pat speak of that me I realised what a deep strength she had. She was heartbroken by Shorty’s death, but not fla ened. She had a family to look a er. She con nued to cook, sew and be a mother, but she also took on three jobs: one in the morning, another in the a ernoon and one in the evening.

That was Pat: she coped with whatever life threw at her in a quiet, smiling, dignified way.

Pat married Alan Henderson in 1969 and she and the family spent summer holidays at Noetzie.

One of Pat’s legacies was the “open house” Old Year’s Night par es at the castle. Everyone was welcome.

What impressed me most about Pat was her huge heart.

She spread kindness, generosity and love way beyond her family and close friends.

She was a commi ed Chris an, but hardly ever spoke about it, just tried to live the essence of it.

And then there was Pat’s sense of humour. She loved a joke and had a laugh that made everyone want to join in. Pat leaves behind her daughters, Sharon, Cathy and Lynn, several grandchildren, great-grandchildren and a few great-great-grandchildren.

She also leaves behind wonderful memories in the minds of all who knew her.
