STREETLIGHT STUDIES AND PEA-SOUP FOG I have been staring at a photograph of seven young guys si ng in a row under a streetlight.

They all have books open on their laps. Two at the end have looked up at the person taking the photograph but the rest are all focused on their books.

What are they doing? Their homework.

They are doing their homework under a streetlight because they have no electricity at home.

The photograph fascinated me because it illustrated in such a perfect way what millions have to overcome in so many parts of the world, just to do normal everyday things.

The pic was in an ar cle by a really excellent organisa on called Our World in Data. It takes the work of thousands of researchers who study the “big problems” that the world faces, and puts this informa on online in a way we can all understand. It is brilliant.

The guys in the photo are from Guinea, but they could be almost anywhere in sub-Saharan Africa where 43% of people have no access to electricity.

The photo shows both the obstacles they face, and their determina on to overcome them.

Another interes ng fact I learned from this ar cle was that in prewar London, only 65% of households had electricity. I had no idea.

Always thought all Londoners had electricity by the late 1930s.

But here is an even more interes ng fact: only 11% of the Londoners who had electricity had electric stoves. The rest cooked on wood or coal stoves.

This made a huge amount of smoke and when there was fog in London it mixed together to make a ghastly “pea-soup” fog, yellowish-green and full of soot and poisonous sulphur dioxide gas.

In December 1952 there was a pea-soup fog that lasted for days.

The toxic fog brought all public transport in London to a halt – and killed 4,000 people. They were mostly the very young, the elderly, and people who had respiratory problems. It led to the UK banning coal-burning in many areas.

Cooking over open wood and coal fires inside homes creates indoor air pollu on, and that is also is a killer, causing diseases like pneumonia and lung cancer.

We have been cooking over fires since we learned to make fire, but our lungs have suffered. The World Health Organisa on es mates that 3.8 million people die every year from indoor air pollu on from open fires.

We need to get electricity to everyone, but also need to avoid air pollu on and reduce climate-changing carbon emissions. It must be clean electricity like solar and wind power. In South Africa, which has excellent wind and sun resources, we s ll burn coal to generate 88% of our electricity.

It’s a shame. Old King “Coal” should be a goner for good.

I look at the photograph again. Most countries are moving towards electrifica on, but for many millions like these guys from Guinea, it is just too slow.

So they have made a plan: they study by streetlight.

I really admire that.

And who knows? Maybe there will be a renewable energy entrepreneur among them.
