LOCKDOWN AGAIN SO it’s lockdown level 4 again. Oh boy, another body blow to so many businesses s ll struggling to get back on their feet a er 2020: restaurants, pubs, event organisers, wine farmers, the liquor trade, hotels, B&Bs, the whole tourism industry. Just when they were star ng to come right.

Some did not make it, of course: The number of liquida ons between March 2020 and March 2021 increased by 49%.

The new restric ons are a par cular blow for Knysna, Ple and Sedgefield, whose main economy is tourism, par cularly coming on the eve of big draw cards like the Oyster Fes val and Knysna Marathon.

It is some mes hard to believe that a microscopic bug can wreak damage to human lives and the economy on such an enormous scale - and for so long. If this were a sci-fi movie I would say the plot was wearing a bit thin now.

Time for Luke Skywalker to stride in with his light-saber and lay waste this Covid scourge.

Sadly there are no Jedi, but there does seem to be hope in the form of vaccines. They’re not a silver bullet, but seem to be the most promising route available right now.

South Africa is lagging way behind. Only 3.5% of the popula on has received one jab, and less than 1% of South Africans have had the required two jabs. We have a very long way to go.

Not only us, but also the rest of Africa and many other middleincome and poor countries.

There has been a lot of finger poin ng at government over the dismally slow vaccine programme, with some jus fica on. But there is a bigger picture to the vaccine story.

Remember the Covax programme, backed by the World Health Organisa on, to rollout vaccines equitably throughout the world, and poor and middle-income countries would get them free?

What happened? Why is most of Africa without vaccines?

As an interes ng ar cle in MenaFN explained this week, rich countries started to sign deals directly with vaccine companies even before the vaccines were ready. They bought more than they needed and hoarded them. Just 10 countries have administered 75% of all the Covid vaccines produced so far.

The result was that Covax “failed spectacularly” because rich countries focused on themselves instead of on the global fight against the pandemic.

It was shortsighted because there are now all these countries where very few people have been vaccinated, where the coronavirus can happily mutate to make new variants. And a virus knows no borders.

“The reality is that the virus will bite back hard through variants currently incuba ng in countries le with no vaccines,” the ar cle said.

On the bright side, the G7 countries said on Sunday they will give one billion vaccines to poor countries over the next year, while the World Health Organisaiton is working with a consor um to establish a unit in South Africa where we can start making our own.

Sounds good, hope it all works out, but as they say, talk is cheap, money buys the whiskey.
