SKULLS AND BONES: OUR FRAGILE HERITAGE Noetzie is well-known for the “castles”, but how many know about the skeletons that were found under the lawn of the old Noetzie Castle? In July 2006 I got a call from my sister Julie from Ac on Ads who had been alerted by a municipal security guard at Noetzie that a skeleton had been dug up by construc on workers at Noetzie Castle. She and Wendy Dewberry rushed there, climbed onto the balcony of an adjacent house and saw a human skull lying with a pile bones next to a trench. They took photographs and I wrote a news story. It was quite shocking really. The skeleton was later found to be that of a teenaged “Khoisan” boy, who had been buried 2 000 years ago. He had lain undisturbed un l dug up by construc on workers. That should not have happened. Valuable archaeological evidence was lost forever. The developer of Pezula Private Estate, who had bought Noetzie Castle from the Hendersons, was redeveloping it and building a swimming pool and a bigger sep c tank. I was told by Heritage Western Cape at the me that archaeologists had dug test pits before building work began, and found a prehistoric midden where the swimming pool was to be built. They said the midden had to be excavated by professionals before the pool was built. A midden is just a rubbish heap really, but a midden thousands of years old is a gold mine of informa on. The skeleton was found where the sep c tanks were to go. Turned out Knysna Municipality had not yet approved the sep c tanks, so construc on had begun without authorisa on. Officials immediately halted further work. Meanwhile the cops had taken the skeleton away. Was all a bit of a mess really. Fortunately archaeologists later conducted a proper excava on of the midden, which had built up over about 5 000 years. They found many interes ng artefacts, including stone and bone tools, clay pot fragments, ostrich eggshell beads, bone pendants and a second skeleton of an adult male, curled up in the tradi onal burial posi on. Bone and shell remains showed that these people had eaten a varied diet, including fish, shellfish, seals, antelope, dassies, bushpig, porcupines and mongoose. I love to think of that. Ancient hunter-gathers collec ng shellfish on the very rocks I am looking at now, and carrying them to what later became the lawn of Noetzie Castle to eat. Perhaps roas ng a dassie or a bokkie. Singing songs or cha ng. In tears when they buried the boy. How had he died? We will probably never know. Had it not been for the alert security guard, we may never have known that his 2000-year-old skeleton was there at all. One of the directors of the development said at the me he was “not aware” that the heritage authori es had to be no fied immediately human remains were found. We have good laws to protect our archaeological heritage, but too few prac oners to ensure laws are adhered to. This is one of the cases when ordinary ci zens have to take up the slack.
