WHAT WE LOSE WHEN WE WORK FROM HOME Many people say they loved working from home during lockdown.

I understand the joy of no bumper-to-bumper traffic, but some of their reasons are weird.

“Oh, I can work in my pyjamas all day.” How depressing.

When I moved from a busy city newsroom to work at home, I felt the shock almost like a physical force. This was long before Covid, when I started freelancing. I felt I had been dropped in the jungle with only a knife and a box of matches. I hated it.

How could one work without the s mula on of colleagues?

Produce good news stories without those random p-offs from someone who happened to be at the printer when I was? Or being given a crucial cell number from a colleague I bumped into in the corridor? Hearing a snippet of conversa on that triggered a thought that took your inves ga on where is needed to go?

I learned this week that what I desperately missed is called “incidental informa on exchange”. Isn’t it great when there is a name for something you felt but thought no one else did?

Covid has taught us how very important this is.

It is all in a book by Gillian Te called Anthro-Vision. I have not read it, but read an ar cle she wrote called The Empty Office: What We Lose When We Work from Home. Fascina ng stuff.

Anthropologists have long said that the informal, unplanned interac ons ma er most in any work environment.

Covid gave researchers the perfect “laboratory” to test this.

Most financial traders worked from home during lockdown, but some worked from the office.

Te says interviews with big American and European banks revealed that the traders working in the office did “much, much be er than those at home”. The researcher a ributed this to the office workers having their normal “incidental informa on exchange”.

She quotes a US banker who said when staff worked at home “the bit that’s very hard to replicate is the informa on you didn’t know you needed… when you hear a word that triggers a thought.”

Apparently the engineers who created the Internet recognised the value of personal exchange long ago. They founded the Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF) in 1986 to provide a place to “collec vely design the architecture of the web”.

Its members made design decisions using “rough consensus”.

So what did these big brains do? They devised a system of humming.

“When they needed to make a crucial decision, the group asked everyone to hum to indicate ‘yay’ or ‘nay’.”

The decision was made by whatever group hummed the loudest.

I love it!

And apparently some of the biggest decisions about how the Internet works today were made using this humming ritual – and s ll are.

“Most people do not even know that the IEFT exists, much less that computer engineers design the web by humming,” says Te .

When Covid hit, IEFT switched to virtual mee ngs. The majority of staff found these less produc ve.

“We need to meet in person to get meaningful work done,” said one.

So, says Te , even in a digital world, humans need physical connec ons we o en ignore.
