RUBBISH: GOLDEN KEY TO UPLIFTMENT Remember when former Environment Minister Valli Moosa said plas c bags were like South Africa’s na onal flower?

Well, driving around the Karoo recently I felt inclined to agree.

Rubbish all over the place, clinging to fences and bushes. So ugly.

In Aberdeen I met a woman who is determined to change this. Lizzie van der Merwe, mother of two grown children, recently moved to Aberdeen from Gauteng, and she wants to help upli the town.

“We really need tourism in Aberdeen, but we have to clean up the town first. How can you a ract people to a place that is full of rubbish?”

Si ng around a braai fire Lizzie sketched her plans. First, she wants to get recycling going, involving children in the project. They collect recyclable rubbish and get one point for every kilogram.

They can exchange these points for goods in her “shop” such as clothing, sta onery, toiletries and food.

“I don’t want to put cash in the hands of kids because there is a lot of poverty and unemployment here, and also alcohol and drug abuse, and I don’t want them to be targeted by bullies. Also this teaches them to work towards a goal by saving their points.”

She has secured premises in Aberdeen and the project is just star ng.

What made her think of this idea?

I was delighted to hear that she is copying a project from Sedgefield, where volunteers have been running the “Fresh Start” programme for several years. Sedgefield children collected over 44,000kg of rubbish in 2018.

Hats off to them.

Lizzie is also star ng a Farmer Kidz project, a project of the Ins tute for Rural and Community Development that has ini a ves all over Africa designed to improve the quality of life for people.

Farmer Kidz teaches children how to grow vegetables and also teaches them entrepreneurial skills in marke ng their produce. Lizzie already has some veggies growing – in bags with compost – and they look really good.

“We hope this will be replicated at each household, because people do have ground here. If you plant potatoes every second week, you can have an unlimited supply of potatoes. And it is not hard work.”

The third leg of her project is educa on, teaching children from the tried and tested Le erland literacy programme.

“And also to have a playground here, a safe place where kids can play.”

How will she fund it?

Ini ally she will have to “bite the bullet” and fund it herself, but ul mately she will need dona ons.

“I think people will trust the programme once they see what we are achieving without asking too much, and I think they will then donate.”

What I like about Lizzie’s ini a ve is that she has taken projects that have worked elsewhere and adapted them for Aberdeen, instead of re-inven ng the wheel.

“I really want to make a difference in lives, and recycling is a way to get to the next goal of educa on and upli ment.”

Makes me think of Mar n Luther King’s comment: “Life’s most persistent and urgent ques on is, what are you doing for others?”
