Monday will be the four-year anniversary of the 2017 Garden Route fires that burned for two weeks, destroyed more than 1 000 houses, claimed seven lives and clocked up direct losses of over R3-billion.

It was a trauma c event, and some people may not even want to think about it.

Every person in Knysna, Sedgefield and Ple remembers the 7th of June, and each has their own tale to tell.

So much has been wri en about those fires, and recommenda ons made, but one wonders how many real changes have been made to reduce the risk of another mega-fire.

Or is it a case of the heat is off so our minds are focused elsewhere?

I say this because when I a ended the Southern Cape Fire Protec on Associa on AGM recently, I learned three startling facts: First, it is not a case of “if” the Knysna region will experience another big fire, but “when”. Second, we have no dis nct “fire season” in the southern Cape. The distribu on of big fires is more or less even throughout the year, so there is no period when we can let down our guard. Third, we are actually in a drought – a “green drought”. There has been enough light rain to keep the veld green, but we have not had heavy rainfall for the last three years. As we all know, drought was one of the main reasons why the 2017 fires burned so fiercely. Then there is the explosion of alien vegeta on. Every post-fire report said we must “reduce the fuel load”, and perhaps some people have, but when I drive around I see dense stands of aliens just wai ng to feed a fire.

Fires are becoming more frequent and more devasta ng globally because of climate change.

Don’t want to depress you guys, just saying that the 2017 fires were a wake-up call, but I’m not sure how many of us actually got out of bed and how many just pressed the snooze bu on.

There are local government elec ons on 27th October. Every aspiring councillor who says “vote for me” must show us what he or she has done to help fire-proof Knysna.

We must also put pressure on insurance companies to cover the risk associated with doing controlled burns. We need controlled burns to reduce the fuel load, but without risk cover, most people won’t do it, so the fuel load is growing.

There are also many small measures each of us can take to reduce the risk, like cleaning gu ers o en to avoid a build-up of leaves. If burning embers hit the roof, they roll down into the gu ers, set the leaves alight, the fires gets under the eaves and the house is on fire. Keep hoses that are long enough to reach all sec ons of the house. Don’t have vegeta on growing close to the house. Don’t stack woodpiles against the walls – and many more.

A report by Santam and the University of Stellenbosch said the Knysna fires were “arguably the worst wildfire disaster in South Africa’s history”.

We cannot be caught unprepared again.
