SECRETS OF OLD POO AND PLAQUE A thousand years ago some people living in what is now Mexico squa ed down to poo.

They could never have imagined that a thousand years later scien sts would be scratching about in their poo with excitement, finding out all sorts of fascina ng informa on.

Most poo just disappears, of course, but when the condi ons are just right, some survives for thousands or even millions of years to become fossils called coprolites.

Archaeologists have been examining fossil poo for many years and have found interes ng informa on about the diet of ancient people from the seeds and bits of bone found in the faeces.

But more recently researchers have taken this further, and can now see microscopic organisms that lived in the ancient people’s gut and were excreted in their poo.

I always knew we had a lot of micro-organisms in our intes nes, but I had no idea just how many: 100 trillion! It is an u erly astonishing figure, way more than all the stars in the Milky Way. Most microbes are bacteria, but there are some viruses, fungi and others.

These gut microbes are crucial for good health, and the greater number of different species we have, the be er for our health. In fact, researchers say that not having enough different species of gut microbes is associated with several chronic diseases.

The scien sts who analyzed the poo from the Mexican archaeological site found something very interes ng: a whole bunch of the microbes that lived in the gut of humans 1000 years ago have since become ex nct. We don’t have them in our gut anymore. In fact, 38% of the ancient micro-organisms in the fossil poo are species never seen before.

Why did they become ex nct? Well, the scien sts don’t know for sure, but in their research published this month in the journal Nature, they suggest the microbes may have died off because of the processed food we eat and the drugs we take.

Most processed food contains emulsifiers, which studies have shown reduce the number of microbe species in the gut, and ar ficial sweeteners also have a nega ve effect on gut bacteria – just for starters.

An -bio cs can kill gut bacteria of course, but increasingly researchers say other drugs, which improve people’s lives or even help keep them alive, may also be nega vely affec ng the gut microbes.

Catch-22 né?

Researchers don’t only scratch around in ancient poo – they also scratch around in the plaque on ancient teeth. Recently scien sts analyzed the bacteria in the plaque of Neanderthals that lived 100,000 years ago, and found that these cavemen and women were not scoffing huge amounts of meat as we picture them doing.

The plaque bacteria suggest they were ea ng lots of starchy, carbohydrate-rich foods.

What also excited the researchers was that this shi in diet to one that was mainly starch happened way earlier than they thought, thousands of years before humans developed agriculture, which was only about 10,000 years ago.

Astonishing what dead bacteria can tell us, isn’t it?

Now to wean myself off crisps and ice cream and give my gutguys a be er chance.
