SHOULDER SURFING ALIVE IN KNYSNA We know “internet surfing” and “couch surfing”, but “shoulder surfing”? It was a new one to me, and sadly I know someone who was the vic m of it last weekend.

Shoulder surfing is when someone stands close behind a person at an ATM in order to see them enter their PIN. This happened to a friend, Sandy, at an ATM in the foyer of the Knysna Municipality’s Main Road office on Saturday. The criminal scammed her of R2000 – and she wants people to know what happened as a cau onary tale.

There were several people around when she walked up to the Standard Bank ATM, but she was told by one of them that it was not working and that she should use the Nedbank machine, which she did.

She inserted her FNB card and was puzzled when nothing familiar came up on the screen.

“While I was looking, a tall man came up close behind me and said: ‘Hurry up, I need to use the machine.’ I told him I was busy and put in my pin. While I was trying to fathom out the screen, he said it was the new cardless screen and he kept nagging me to hurry up. I told him to leave me alone,” Sandy said.

“Then he told me I had to put my cell number in, which the screen did ask for, so I entered it. Then suddenly another guy came forward and started pushing bu ons. I told him to stop. By then I just wanted to exit and get my card back, but the screen did not give me that op on.”

Suddenly the two men disappeared and Sandy was le with just a slip of paper that the machine had ejected, but no card.

“I thought the machine had gobbled my card and phoned the number on the ATM, but no one answered.”

Feeling ra led, Sandy went home and cancelled her card.

Later, to her astonishment, she saw on her phone there had been a cash withdrawal of R2000 from her account. She phoned the bank’s fraud line.

“The lady I spoke to said those guys had done something to the machine before I got there. I realised that the tall guy that was hassling me must have seen my pin over my shoulder, because I am short, and then the other guy that started pressing bu ons must have taken my card. They must have run from there to the FNB ATM.” Sadly, Sandy’s experience is all too common. The South African Banking Risk Informa on Centre reported that the total loss to fraud for SA-issued cards in 2019 was R1.07billion. The most common hotspots for card fraud were ATMs, tollgates, “drinking places”, liquor stores and supermarkets.

Check out an online television interview with a crook who uses a “grabber” that clones cards. He can check accounts to see deposits and withdraws the funds the minute they are deposited.

You really have to have eyes in the back of your head.

And as the CrimeStop guy used to say: “Keep ‘em peeled!”
