CLIMATE CHANGE IN A TEACUP Global climate change may seem remote, but what if it started affec ng your morning cuppa? It already is, according to a recent report. Rising temperatures, drought, erra c rainfall and flash floods are taking their toll on the tea-growing areas of the world. As a result, tea may become less available, more expensive and – this is the big one – the taste of tea may change. Brings climate change a bit closer to home, doesn’t it? The report was published this week by the UK organisa on Chris an Aid, which pulled together findings of various researchers who have been looking at the effects of climate change on tea growing for some years. I learned quite a bit about tea, something we always take so much for granted. Not surprising, as it is the most consumed drink in the world a er water. For instance, I learned that the flavour of tea comes from something called “secondary metabolites”, aroma c substances in the tea leaves. These differ from one tea to another and give each its dis nct flavour. (Know your Darjeeling from you Oolong, do you?) They also give tea an -oxidant quali es and caffeine. Farmers in the ancient tea-growing countries of China, India and Sri Lanka built up tradi onal knowledge about these substances over thousands of years, and knew that they could be affected by al tude, slope, shade and sun, soil types and so on. They also knew that the flavours of tea harvested a er the monsoon rains were not as good as those harvested in spring a er the dry period, meaning the monsoon harvest did not get as good a price as the spring harvest. The reason is that a lot of rain dilutes the metabolites, and so dilutes the flavour. That was all part of their industry for thousands of years. But now tea farmers have to get used to something new: unseasonably high levels of rain because of climate change. This not only dilutes the tea’s flavour, but also stops the tea plants from making these aroma c metabolites. As the report says, when the tea plants get too much rain “they suffer a double whammy”. And climate change’s high temperatures strip tea of its health benefits, such as boos ng the immune system. One researcher found that tea’s key health substances were reduced by 50% when the leaves were harvested a er heavy rains. So ja, climate change is set to affect even our morning cuppa. So cut down on your climate-changing carbon emissions. Fewer plane trips. Fewer car trips. Switch off those lights you are not using. Turn your geyser down to 60°C. Eat less meat. Recycle, reuse, make do. End of lesson. What I also find interes ng is that although tea found its way into Europe in the early 1600s, only some European countries took to it in a big way: Russia, the Netherlands, and of course the UK, where it has almost become part of the Bri sh iden ty. Remember that famous remark by Bri sh singer Boy George? He told an interviewer that he preferred “a nice cup of tea” to sex.
