A highlight was a 4-day trip down part of the Hoarusib River. A magic trip. Stark desert beauty, rugged canyon walls and some stretches when the dry riverbed was just big rocks. Tough on the vehicles and drivers, but they loved it. I have a vivid memory of one vehicle temporarily stuck at a scary angle on a steep, sandy bank. The only other people we saw in that me were some Himba in the distance. We made camp wherever we found a good spot, had crackling camp fires and slept under the stars. One day we le the vehicles and hiked into the veld and slept up a koppie – on a bed of pebbles. Luckily I had a hiking ma ress. The others had nothing except sleeping bags. I remember one of the Namibians saying: “That ma ress is like the dollar: its value goes up by the hour.” We did not have a lot of water and whinged a bit about being thirsty. James dismissed this: “Oh please, the Himba live on a cupful a day.” Mu erings of: “Yes but we’re not Himba.” It is strange to think that a night sky encrusted with stars has become something most people can no longer see because of light pollu on from urban centres. That night up on the koppie we saw more stars than I had seen in years. Some of the others were unable to fall asleep on the stony ground so I suggested coun ng shoo ng stars – instead of sheep. I love doing that. We also saw satellites cruising across the night sky, so counted those too. That night was something of a milestone for me because for the very first me in my life – this was 2016 – I saw more satellites than shoo ng stars: nine satellites and seven shoo ng stars. It made an impression on me because it brought home how far humanity’s influence has stretched, right into the heavens. Got a WhatsApp from Julie’s group that said at the end of a hot day they got to a place with a pub. Julie ordered a G&T. Clearly the Namibian barman had not heard of that abbrevia on, and instead of a gin and tonic, he brought her a cup of tea. Lost in transla on! Much laughter and explana ons and eventually she got her drink. There is something so appealing about deserts, and I remember trying to drink it all in before heading home. But then I remember a Namibian staying here at Noetzie over Christmas saying the same about the Garden Route. “I am just trying to drink in all this green before I leave!” he said. Guess it is like all travel: it is experiencing the big differences from home that make it so fascina ng. Latest post from Julie: they are heading down to the Skeleton Coast.
