OCTOPUS WINS – TENTACLES DOWN! ISN’T it wonderful that My Octopus Teacher won an Oscar for the best documentary?

I am over the moon for the South African team that made the movie, and I think all South Africans will have cheered too.

This comes just a er My Octopus Teacher won a BAFTA – o en described as the “Bri sh Oscars”.

I have to bask in some reflected glory here and add that one of the directors, Pippa Ehrlich, who accepted the coveted golden statue at the Oscar awards ceremony in Los Angeles on Sunday, is my neighbour in Kalk Bay. So that makes me extra chuffed.

Last me I saw Pippa was about 2 weeks ago when we bumped into each other over the washing line. She was looking exhausted. She had just come back from the BAFTA awards done “remotely” in Joburg, and had been giving wall-to-wall interviews for days.

“All I want to do is sleep,” she said.

But no sleep for the good and she flew to LA for the Oscars a few days later.

“When I get there I have to be staying in quaran ne in the hotel for 10 days. I think I will just sleep.”

I asked if she thought Octopus stood a good chance.

“I don’t know. We are up against some tough compe on.”

But they did it!

For those of you who have seen it, you will no doubt feel the award is well deserved. For those who have not, check it out on Ne lix.

The documentary seems to have evolved a life of its own.

It began in 2011 with Cape Town moviemaker Craig Foster, who made that fascina ng documentary The Great Dance about Kalahari San hunters in 2000.

Craig was suffering from burnout. He said in a Time interview that he remembered how the San immersed themselves in nature and realised that this was what he was missing. Instead of going back into the desert, he decided to go diving in the cold waters of False Bay. He said in that interview: “The cold calms you. It fills your brain with feel-good chemicals. And then you are in this golden forest….and that becomes your underwater home, especially if you are visi ng it every day”.

Craig did not intend to make a movie, but did take underwater shots over many years. During this me he began his “friendship” with an octopus.

When Pippa and co-director James Reed became involved, there was already about 3000 hours of footage Craig had taken.

They spent a couple of years both filming more of Craig and his octopus friend, and weaving it together with Craig’s material.

When she accepted the Oscar, Pippa said: “In many ways this is a ny, personal story that played out in a sea forest at the very p of Africa. On a more personal level, I hope it provided a glimpse of a different type of rela onship between human beings and the natural world.”

James Reed added: “If a man can form a friendship with an octopus, it does sort of make you wonder what else is possible.”
