SHOVING LEOPARDS FADE INTO BOLIVIAN Do you ever get a saying quite wrong? I remember one idiom that I had unknowingly used incorrectly for years, and it was only when I was a young reporter and had wri en it in a news story that the news editor laughed and put me right.

I thought the expression to admit defeat was “to throw in the trowel”. I had a picture of a red person who had been digging all day and had now had enough and threw his trowel into the dust.

I was quite disbelieving at first when he said the saying was “to throw in the towel”. Why towel? Well, he said, it came from boxing because boxers threw their sweaty towels into the ring when they had decided to give up the fight.

I liked trowel be er.

And then there are “mondegreens”. I love those. They come about when people mishear a phrase and subs tute a different one that gives it new meaning. We o en did that as youngsters when listening to rock songs.

Some of these mondegreens have become quite famous, like the Jimi Hendrix song that says: “Scuse me while I kiss the sky”.

Millions thought it was “Scuse me while I kiss this guy”.

And Creedence Clearwater Revival’s song that said: “There’s a bad moon on the rise” was heard by millions as “there’s a bathroom on the right.” The Hendrix mishearing is easier to understand than that one.

One mondegreen that I’ve always liked was apparently the result of children misunderstanding the words of a hymn.

The correct words were: “Kept by thy tender care, gladly the cross I’d bear”.

This became: “Gladly, the cross-eyed bear”. Sweet.

The word mondegreen was coined by an American writer Sylvia Wright when she wrote about what she had misheard when her mother had read her the Sco sh ballad “The Bonny Earl of Murray”. The poem ends by saying they had slain the Earl of Murray and “laid him on the green”. She heard it as “they have slain the Earl of Murray and Lady Mondegreen”.

“Spoonerisms” are also fun, when le ers are switched around by accident.

They were named a er an Oxford University lecturer, William Spooner, who apparently had a habit of doing this, although most of those a ributed to him he never said. But they are funny. How can anyone make the mistake of saying, instead of “The Lord is a loving shepherd”, say “The Lord is a shoving leopard”?

And then there are people who just decide to change the meaning of words. I had some colleagues who said to me once: “You really are a busybody!” I was totally taken aback and asked why they said that. A er all, I had never poked my nose into their business. They looked blank and replied: “Well, you are so busy clearing up you desk.” Haha – did not feel I could point out their mistake.

And don’t you like the error champion boxer Mike Tyson made when asked what his plans were a er losing a world tle fight: “I might fade into Bolivian”.
