THE BARD, A PIPE AND SOME WEED. Was Shakespeare a dagga smoker?

Seems that he may well have been – and that the occasional puff of the weed may have given him literary inspira on. I rather like the idea.

I found this out in a 2015 copy of a SA Archaeological Society newsle er someone gave me last week during a clean-out.

Many of you may have heard of, or seen in museums, those long clay pipes that the Dutch used hundreds of years ago. The Dutch se lers at the Cape used them and archaeologists have dug up plenty in sites around Cape Town.

What did these guys smoke? Local archaeologist Francis Thackeray carried out a chemical analysis of the gunge le on the inside of these 17th century pipes to find the answer. He and colleagues analysed pipes from Cape Town, Amsterdam and the UK’s Stra ord-upon-Avon, including from Shakespeare’s garden.

They found that eight of the 24 pipes tested from Stra ordupon-Avon contained dagga residue, four of which came from Shakespeare’s own garden. How about that! I didn’t even know cannabis had reached Europe in those days.

Thackeray says one of the extraordinary things about the analyses was that they showed that Europeans smoked all sorts of plants back then, not only tobacco. One example was dagga, an Asian cannabis, which they mixed with tobacco. Others were plants like cinnamon, vanilla and even camphor that they added to the tobacco to give “an added taste or fragrance”. So who thought vaping was new.

And cocaine! In some of the old pipes from England – but not those from Shakespeare’s garden – the researchers found evidence of Peruvian cocaine.

In some of the pipes from Amsterdam they found that the Dutch had even been smoking roses with their tobacco.

Then these scien sts move out of their laboratories and into Shakespeare’s poetry: could this dagga be, they ask, what Shakespeare was referring to in his Sonnet 76 when he wrote about “inven on in a noted weed”? They suggest “inven on” here relates to crea ve wri ng.

They think it may be significant that no traces of cocaine were found in the pipes from Shakespeare’s garden. They say that Shakespeare seems to express a preference, in that same sonnet, to turn away from what he refers to as “compounds strange”.

“Is this an indica on that he recognised cocaine to have mindblowing proper es, whereas a ‘noted weed’, dagga, could in modera on s mulate crea vity?” they ask.

Other writers have dismissed this, saying that “weed” was just another word for clothing.

Then there was a Harvard professor who was quoted saying: “I suppose it’s remotely possible that Shakespeare and his family were ge ng a buzz from what they were smoking, but I very much doubt that it played a meaningful role in his life.”

Shakespeare was, of course, a genius. Whenever I read anything he has wri en I am struck again not only by the depth of his understanding of humanity, but by his ability to express it so beau fully.
