THE POWER OF SUN AND WIND GOT caught out by load-shedding last week. Didn’t ma er, really, as it was nearly bed me, but got a skrik when suddenly we were plunged into darkness.

So it was with a happy heart that I read that the government had given the go-ahead to eight private companies to build new power sta ons due to come online in August next year. Even happier that most of them will be clean wind and solar power, instead of pollu ng coal power.

These companies will build them on me or face penal es – unlike Eskom that has been building that massive coal-fired Medupi power plant forever!

Originally Medupi was going to cost R55 billion and come online in 2012. By 2019 it had already cost R234 billion – and it is s ll not finished.

The beauty of renewable energy is that the “fuel” is free, there is no pollu on and no carbon emissions to make global warming even worse.

What I really like about our government’s renewable energy programme is that the private companies selected to build and operate them have to donate a certain amount of their profits to social and economic upli ment programmes for people who live in a 50km radius of these power plants. Those communi es have a say in how they would like that money spent.

I went to a renewable energy conference where delegates spoke about some of these projects.

One delegate said teachers in a Northern Cape town, where a solar power plant had been built, wanted a school feeding programme to be financed by this money. Most of the kids in that area did not come to school. A programme was set up where every child who came to school got breakfast. Within days they had 100% a endance. Shame man, those kids probably just could not face the long trek to school on an empty stomach. How simple, yet how effec ve: children get educated and fed at the same me, all because of a solar power project.

The other nice story concerned a wind energy project in the Eastern Cape. The community eligible to get funding from the wind power plant were asked what they wanted as a priority.

The delegate who told the story said they had expected things like a crèche. But no. They wanted their eyes tested, old and young, and spectacles provided for those who needed them.

Who would have thought? So they did that, and suddenly new horizons opened up for many people: old people, who just needed simple magnifying specs, could read again. Children who had fallen behind in class discovered that once they could see the blackboard, it all became easy.

Makes me want to cry to think so many people in our country lack such basic things as breakfast and a pair of specs – and the profound impact this has on educa on.

Makes we want to jump for joy to know that our renewable energy programme has provided such basic things to at least a few people.

It is just a drop in the ocean, but to those individuals it has been a life-changer.
