My Dad was a wonderful father with a bottomless cup of love and warmth. I cherish the friendship we have and know with all my heart that it is eternal. He believed we were spiritual beings living a human experience.

He stood proudly for all human rights and was a lover of the arts and literature. He gathered many trophies along the way, but his children were the ones he held highest. I am proud that he chose my beautiful mother and I’m proud of my mother for choosing my father. I’m grateful for all the love and opportunities they both sent our way.

Nancy and I have everything we will ever need. I will miss his handwriting and his witty, humorous ways. I’m in Canada with family and friends, and thank you for all the love from around the world and support. If Dad had one wish it would probably be for all to flourish and prosper. With all my love, Your son, Adam Rademeyer I was Daddy’s-girl from the moment I was born. He filled my childhood with unconditional love and laughter.

Life with him had many ups and downs but still I could not have chosen a better father. My heart aches but I’m incredibly lucky to have so many beautiful memories with him. Life without him is daunting but I know in some way he’ll always be with us. He has the most special place in my heart where he will be with me forever.

FIRST CATCH YOUR HIPPO ANY of you know the colour of hippo sweat? It’s red. I saw it myself on a hippo that had sadly died during a capture opera on at Lake St Lucia back in the 1980s when hippo capture was s ll in its early stages.

The huge animal, lying on its side, had ny red beads of fluid all over its skin.

“Hippo sweat,” the ranger said.

I was fascinated. Red sweat.

The topic of hippos came up on Sunday when a young rela ve was telling us what he had learned about hippo and their mighty teeth that could kill an adult.

His mum said: “You have seen those teeth in ac on, haven’t you?”

Indeed I had, while working as a journo for the then Natal Parks Board. The board’s game capture team ran one of the finest opera ons in the world, par cularly with rhino capture.

Hippo capture was another ma er. No one anywhere had had much success, but the hippo popula on at Lake St Lucia was growing and the board wanted to capture and translocate some to areas where hippo had become ex nct.

Easier said than done.

The capture team used an immobilizing drug called M99 that they shot into an animal using a syringe-dart fired from a helicopter. They could obviously not dart hippo in the water because they would drown once the immobilizing drug had taken effect. But hippo come out of the water to graze at night, so the team’s helicopter was airborne before sunrise searching for grazing hippo and when they found one, darted it.

The first thing a hippo does when threatened is to make for the safety of the water. Rangers in two vehicles had to make sure the hippo did not reach the lake before the drug had taken effect or it would drown.

I was in one of those vehicles, an open Landie.

It was a tricky job keeping this angry, frightened animal away from the water, by driving in front of her and cu ng off her escape route to the lake again and again.

She was fierce, and she was ge ng closer and closer to the lake.

“We can’t lose this one,” the ranger said through gri ed teeth.

Suddenly she had had enough. She turned and charged, heading straight for us, mouth open and those massive teeth bared.

I was terrified. The next moment she was at the vehicle and had clamped her mouth down on the bonnet. I watched gob-smacked as those teeth sank through the metal as if it were paper.

So yes, I have seen those teeth in ac on. Luckily, that capture opera on was a success and the team released her safely into Pilanesberg game reserve.

But here’s something I have learned since then: the red hippo “sweat” is not sweat at all. Scien sts have found that it is made up of two pigments: a red one that acts as a sunblock and protects the hippo’s sensi ve skin from sunburn, and an orange one that acts as an an bio c – excellent for hippo that always have bites from figh ng.

How clever is that!
