ANIMAL SPOOR AND HUMAN TRASH One of the things I love about being the first person on the beach is looking at the tracks in the sand that tell a story of what happened while we were sleeping. I love that sense of discovery.

Here at Noetzie my favourite find is spoor of the Cape clawless o er. I love their prints, their front paws looking so much like li le hands. One of my loveliest o er memories is walking along the rocks in Sinclair Nature Reserve and looking down at an o er lying on its back in the sea, holding a fish in its “hands”, munching away happily.

We are some mes lucky enough to see them at dusk loping from the river to the sea, out for a night’s fishing.

In the early morning I o en find their homeward tracks from the sea to the river, and last week found a spot where they had stopped for roll in the sand. Oh I would have loved to have seen them playing.

Then there are the baboon prints. There is a troop that comes down to the beach occasionally, usually at dawn, and we find their poos standing up like sen nels. I buried a few of these the other day as the de had come in and they were about to roll into the surf. Did not want to dive through a wave later and come up with one on my head.

I also love the intricate pa erns of the plough shells, sea snails that live buried in the sand, but come out to feed on jelly fish and blue bo les. Their “plough-like” inter-weaving tracks make sparkling pa erns in the wet sand in the morning light.

Crabs holes with fresh wet sand outside that the li le crustaceans have dug out in the night, seagull prints and the delicate white feathers of terns.

Last year I found bushbuck spoor on the beach, and followed them towards the bushes, when suddenly there was a crash in the undergrowth and a bushbuck female sped off from her hiding place. I was so stoked.

Then there is the “spoor “ of my fellow humans. Oh my. What tracks we leave: plas c cooldrink bo les, water bo les, sweet wrappers, chip packets, plas c bags, cardboard boxes, toilet paper, earbuds, socks, the occasional nappy and zillions of stompies.

Here is the difference between animal tracks and our “tracks”: in one high de, most of the animal tracks disappear. In one high de, most of the human rubbish stays where it is, some washes out to pollute the ocean, and s ll more washes in to shore.

We are not born knowing that we must not li er. We have to be taught. So who is doing that? Schools? Government? NGOs? If they are, it is not working. What happened to the likes of “Zap it in a Zibi”?

And what are the corporates with all their unnecessary packaging doing?

An -pollu on campaigner Terri Swearingen was spot on when she said: “We are living on this planet and if we have another one to go to.”
