HOW WILL YOU RESPOND TO THE NEW YEAR? New Year has come and gone and I have not heard one person mourn its passing. It’s all a case of “good riddance”.

Understandable, isn’t it? 2020 will go down in history as the year of the horrible pandemic that killed 1.85 million people, filled hospitals to burs ng, drove many people to bankruptcy and hammered economies.

We all want it to end. We all want life to go back to normal. But, of course, wishing won’t make it happen, nor will the fact that the calendar has turned a page make it happen.

The reality is that the pandemic is far from over and certainly a good por on of 2021 will be dominated by Covid-19.

Why am I raising this? Well, to make three points. The first is that the way this pandemic pans out is largely in our own hands. While there is a vaccine, it will be years before that will make Covid go away. In the mean me, there is no doubt that if everyone in the world did the basics – avoided crowds, prac ced social distancing, washed hands frequently, wore a mask – we would be able to keep the pandemic under control.

But millions don’t. Perhaps those prac ces should become our New Year’s Resolu ons. How hard is it to wear a mask for Pete’s sake!

The second point is this: when things seem bad, it is o en a good exercise to see them in a bigger context. Compare Covid-19 to the 1918 Spanish flu. About 500 million people got Spanish flu – nearly two thirds of the world popula on at that me – compared to 85 million Covid cases in a popula on of 7.8 billion today.

In the Spanish flu 50 million people died, compared to 1.85 million deaths for Covid so far. For me, knowing how much worse this could have been, somehow makes me feel be er.

The third point is to express a wish really, that we all focus less on fear and what is wrong with the world, and more on the many everyday experiences that make us smile or feel happy: the laugh of a child; the perfect form of a breaking wave; that first sip of coffee in the morning; the embrace of someone you love; the beauty of a flower in your path; coming home to the smell of dinner cooking; a piece of music you love. There are scores of these li le events that fill us with good feelings every day, but somehow we tend to ignore them and allow ourselves to dwell on what fills us with anger or fear.

Finally, 2021 will, of course, not “be good”, because life is not like that. It is a mixture of good and bad, sadness and joy. And how much happiness we experience in 2021 will depend a lot on how we choose to respond to what ever happens to us – and to the world.
