CHRISTMAS IN THE TIME OF COVID. CHRISTMAS and New Year celebra ons will be different on the Garden Route this year with many fes ve events cancelled because of the Covid-19 pandemic, and beaches closed.

Sad for so many of us who usually stream to beaches with brollys and deckchairs, cooler boxes and watermelons, cold turkey and frisbies.

Some mes I have gone against the na onal de of moving to the coast for Christmas and New Year, and have headed north into the heat and the dust of the Kalahari desert. Sounds crazy in mid summer, but they have been wonderful Christmases.

Takes us two days to get to the Kagalagadi Transfron er Park from the coast. I remember us arriving for New Year at the Gharagab wilderness camp, hot, sweaty and a bit tetchy.

“Let’s take this bubbly to the viewing pla orm before we even unpack.” I wrapped glasses in my kikoy and walked over the hot sand to the deck where we popped the cork.

As we sipped the cold bubbles in that great silence, one by one we too fell silent, staring into the flat red desert stretching away as far as the eye could see.

It felt as if we were enveloped in a great peace, with all the stresses of the year slipping off our shoulders like ice-cream off a cone on a hot summer’s day.

We spent Christmas Eve in Kgalagadi’s Nossop campsite. While the cook in the group got the succulent leg of lamb onto the coals, we dragged a dead thorn tree to our campsite and decorated it with the nsel and baubles we had brought from home. Voila! A Kalahari Christmas tree. Our musician unpacked the guitar and song sheets and we sang carols in the se ng sun. Gradually other campers wandered over with their beers and joined in, complete strangers ge ng together over an old tradi on. It was lovely.

It was a delicious meal, with a pearlspo ed owl calling from a nearby tree and a night sky brilliant with stars.

And as the night drew on, that sound that makes me smile and shiver at the same me: the deep grun ng call of a lion out in the veld.

Not a good idea to be barefoot in the Kalahari night. I knew that, but it was just too hot for shoes. As I stood at the table pouring a glass of wine, I felt as if someone had pushed a red hot coal against the side of my heel. It was a scorpion.

It was so sore and I got such a fright, that I picked up a stone and in the torchlight pulverised the creature into the sand. Not my proudest moment.

Yes, Christmas and New Year will be different this year, but having spent both in many different places over the years, with family and friends and with strangers, I have learned one thing: you can create the Christmas spirit where ever you are and who ever you are with.

Here’s to a happy Christmas and a healthy, prosperous New Year!

Chris ne Mills, a person that lived to serve our Lord, her family and all in the community. An angel in human form who was filled with compassion and love for everyone that crossed her path.

God purposed her to provide comfort, prayer, hugs and support to all - she o en fondly referred to as Knysna’s own “Mother Theresa”.

Just her friendly smile could lighten up somebody’s darkest day - she had a beau ful light shining bright from the inside out.

Her husband, children, grandchildren and extended family were honoured and blessed to be able to share such a wonderful person with the community.

Mom, our pillar of strength, rest in peace and in the loving arms of our father. You filled our lives with so much - how can we ever thank you? How can we go on without you? Our lives will never be the same now that you have gone. Mom, thank you for teaching us how to love, respect and honour God as well as all of those around us. We will always love you.
