THE WEIRD AND WACKY “SILLY SEASON” IS HERE. IT’S the “silly season” again when almost everyone is on holiday, there is not much important news, so newspapers fill their pages with trivia. I love it. All those wacky stories instead of the daily grind of important but usually bad news. Predictably, many of this year’s silly season stories have a Covid-19 element. One published by Reuters that really ckled me was about a Romanian shoemaker. In May this year Grigore Lup decided to make a shoe that was a massive size 75. He got the idea for the elongated shoe a er he had no ced many people were ignoring social distancing rules. The extra long shoes would force people to keep their distance. The size 75 Covid shoe took off, and Lup has apparently sold them all over the world. Not only has his Covid shoe helped keep his business afloat during the pandemic, but orders for all sorts of shoes have started coming in from stage performers – and also from people who just have big feet. Another quirky Reuters story: when a bride in a remote Indian village tested posi ve for the coronavirus just hours before her wedding, the couple decided to go ahead with the ceremony anyway. The venue was changed to a quaran ne centre, and they replaced their beau ful wedding ou its with visors, masks and matching blue Hazmat suits. In Belgium Covid-19 restric ons mean no one is allowed to eat inside restaurants – but they can eat outside. Not possible in the European winter of course, so one enterprising restaurateur decided to invite people to bring their camper vans to his parking lot and dine in those. They text their orders ahead and when they arrive, masked waiters bring them their first course. Then, says Reuters, they send a text: “Camper 12, next course please” and the waiter brings it to their camper door. One couple interviewed said it was great to be able to “dine out” in their camper because it gave them a break from their kids. Then there was the florist on the BBC who said her daughter had asked her to make a “wacky” Christmas wreath for her door. She took some greenery from her garden, a ached it to a ring, then poked wire through about 20 brussel sprouts, ed them to the ring and voila! The florist said not many people had been able to get out with Covid, so this was something they could make at home. AP reports that German police are inves ga ng the disappearance of a 2m high wooden sculpture of male genitalia that disappeared from a mountainside. It appears to have been chopped down, with just a pile of sawdust le behind. AP says the 200kg genitalia sculpture had “gained celebrity status” with hikers, and even appeared on Google Maps as a “cultural monument”. But here’s the thing: police say no one knows who the sculpture belonged to, or who put it there originally, so it is not clear that a crime has been commi ed. Yip, it’s the silly season, and don’t you just love it?

After 8 consecutive night duties the Nursing sister looking after me was going to get on a 2 day bus trip back to see her family in KZN and cried because she could not bear to see me, one of her own being sick. For the extremely professional and compassionate medical care that I have received from my colleagues I will forever be indebted. We are truly privileged to have world class Physicians in our town who continue to battle this war methodically and scientifically. To my staff who kept the show going, you are the best. For Carla who has been through this ordeal twice now, there are not enough words to express my appreciation. We have lost good old friends, people who I grew up in front of and also very young people who only started out on their careers. May all those families who have lost a dear one during this pandemic find that with time the loss will become bearable to live a purposeful life again.
