TRAVELLING TORTOISE BRAVES RIVER AND WAVES WE live and learn. A swimming tortoise? Who would have thought. Last year a leopard tortoise – or mountain tortoise as they are also known – popped up in a garden in the Noetzie Conservancy. It is home to many wild animals, from leopards and o er to bushbuck and even aardvark, but we had never seen a leopard tortoise there before. It took a liking to the buffalo grass in the garden of Ac on Ads’ owner Julie, and stuck around for months, happily grazing and drinking from the ground level birdbath. It was big, and if you came near it, it stopped grazing to hiss at you, then carried on chomping. When it got too hot the tortoise - Torty as he became known – would creep under shrubs or long grass to keep cool. In May this year Torty disappeared. Julie was sad, as she had grown fond of Torty, but then she read that leopard tortoises hibernate from May. “So he was spot on me!” she said. Torty reappeared in spring. “I loved seeing Torty in the garden. He was not there all the me, but disappeared for days and would suddenly reappear. It made me so happy to see him,” Julie said. Then in late November another resident, Catherine, saw Torty walking down Noetzie’s Old Wagon Road passed her house. That is quite a long way from Julie’s house on the headland – for a tortoise anyway. The following day Torty was in Catherine’s garden. A li le later a friend called out to her to say she could see Torty walking on the beach where the Noetzie River flows out to sea. A tortoise on the beach? They ran to inves gate and found Torty was already crossing the river. “It was quite high de and a wave came in and swept him along towards the lagoon and he seemed to be struggling a bit, so I went to try to pick him up and help him to the other side. But I didn’t realise how heavy he was so I fell over into the river, fully clothed, s ll holding him. We had eye contact. It was quite strange,” Catherine said. Dripping wet, she guided him to the other side and watched as he tried to get up the sandbank. “He was determined, but the bank was about 4 foot high.” She decided to dig a “ramp” to help him, but eventually Torty found a lower spot and managed to get up the bank. “Last we saw of him he was disappearing into the bushes in Sinclair Nature Reserve. He really was on a mission. Nothing was going to stop him.” Turns out that Catherine need not worried about Torty drowning, because leopard tortoises can swim! According to the SA Na onal Biodiversity Ins tute, leopard tortoises (S gmochelys pardalis) are “able to float and swim slowly, as their large, domed shell has a sizeable lung space that allows buoyancy”. Who knows where Torty has gone and why, or whether he will return to graze on Julie’s green buffalo grass. But we will be looking out for him
