SO much of our past will never be known, and the further back we go, the more difficult it is to find out how people lived thousands of years ago.

But every now and then we get a peek, like last week when archaeologists announced they had discovered fossil footprints made by a woman more than10,000 years ago.

They were found in the White Sands Na onal Park in the United States, and are the longest set of fossil footprints ever discovered.

They stretch for 1.5km in a fairly straight line across what had once been a muddy pan.

The footprints show the woman was not alone. She had a toddler with her. This child’s footprints disappear when she picks it up, and reappear when she puts it down.

Scien sts can tell she had shi ed the toddler from one hip to the other while walking, as the change in weight is reflected in her footprints.

The woman was walking fast, about 1.7m a second. They say a comfortable walking speed is 1.2m to 1.5m a second on a flat, dry surface. Why was she in such a hurry?

They can see places where she stepped over things – puddles perhaps – and places where she slipped a li le.

They don’t know where her footprints end because the tracks head into the White Sands Military Base that is off-limits to the scien sts.

But the woman’s tracks reappear as she heads back along the route she had come, probably a couple of hours later.

But this me she has no child with her: there are no child’s footprints and no sign of her carrying a weight.

There are hundreds of thousands of other fossil footprints on the ancient pan, mainly of animals, some of which are now ex nct, like mammoths and sabre-toothed cats. The tracks of these ex nct animals, some of which overlay the woman’s, help determine the age of her footprints.

What was the story behind the tracks? Why was the woman alone with child out on the vast pan with wild animals, walking fast?

Had they been caught in a rainstorm, sheltered somewhere and were now hurrying home? Then why did she leave her child? Or was she from a different se lement returning a lost child? Was the child sick and being take somewhere for treatment?

The University of Bournemouth scien sts say answering any of these ques ons is pure specula on.

Whatever the reason for her journey, the scien sts will say this: “Clearly it speaks of social organisa on. They knew their des na on and were assured of a friendly recep on.”

I don’t like to think of her making that journey all on her own. She could have met a sabre-toothed cat! Or did she have no choice? She must have been scared, surely. The scien sts think so too.

“What we can say is that the woman is likely to have been uncomfortable on that hos le landscape, but was prepared to make that journey anyway.”

So we just get a peek at the ancient past, but the footprints keep their secrets.
