WHERE ARE THE WHALES?? HAVE you no ced that there are fewer southern right whales around the coast this winter? Every winter they swim up from the Antarc c to have their babies in the warmer waters around our coast. Every October the University of Pretoria’s Whale Unit flies along the coast to count the number of whales. They have not done the official count yet, but a preliminary count in August between Hermanus and Witsand showed there were only about half the numbers of southern rights this year compared to last year. That is startling. They think the official count is likely to be the second lowest in 30 years. But it is not only this year that there were fewer southern rights migra ng to our coast. Their numbers have been decreasing since 2015. That is sad news, especially as the southern right whale conserva on story has been such a happy one a er they came back from the brink of ex nc on once whaling was banned. So what is the problem now? Why are there so few migra ng to our coast? I spoke to Dr Els Vermeulen, head of the Whale Unit, who said they don’t have the answers yet, but it appears that there is not enough food for the whales in the Southern Ocean to be able to complete their winter migra on to our shores. Southern right whales feed on krill, ny marine animals like mini shrimps. It appears that either there are less krill, or the krill have moved elsewhere. Scien sts think this could be because of climate change. Krill apparently have a complex life cycle and their reproduc on is linked to the sea-ice cycle. We know that the world’s climate is hea ng up because of all the carbon dioxide we pump into the air, that the world’s oceans are warming and sea ice is mel ng. All this could interfere with krill’s reproduc on. Warmer sea temperatures also mean less plankton, which krill feed on. So it seems that less krill in Antarc ca has meant fewer whales on our coast – but this has s ll to be confirmed. If the whales are not here, where are they? “We don’t know that,” said Dr Vermeulen. “Next year we will put satellite tags on some of the whales to see where they go to feed. We wanted to do it this winter, but then Covid happened.” She hopes to tag 10 southern rights on our coast next winter that will enable scien sts to track the whales’ travels. What doesn’t help is that fishing vessels haul up about 380 tons of Antarc c krill every year. One feels a bit helpless with these massive environmental problems – but you can help the whales by helping fund the Whale Unit’s research. NOTICE OF AGM Notice is hereby given that the Annual General Meeting of the members of the Knysna Animal Welfare Society will be held at 18:00 on 21 October 2020 at Knysna Hollow, Welbedacht Lane. Questions on the day will be permitted at the chair’s discretion. To protect the health of those attending, the meeting will be as brief as possible. A written notice of any relevant business, issues or nominations, within the competence of the meeting, must be submitted to the Secretary (g.diedloff@gmail.com) 14 days prior to the meeting. Each new management committee member will be elected by a proposer and a seconder. There will be no voting, because the number of nominees does not exceed the number of vacancies. The nominees will introduce themselves at the AGM. Social distancing will be ensured, and masks are required. Due to Covid-19 regulations, there will not be a gettogether before or after the meeting and space will be limited to a maximum of 50 people. If you have not booked a place, via the secretary, you will not be admitted. We must limit numbers to conform to social distancing requirements. MASKS 4 KNYSNA – A FINAL THANK YOU A er 6 months of sewing, and 30 000 masks later, MASKS 4 KNYSNA is officially ending our wonderful project. This ini a ve began in mid-March, as Corona came to our shores, and our world began to shi . It was clear from the beginning that masks on faces could save lives, and our mission was to “mask Knysna”. We extend a hear elt thank you to Rotary and par cularly to Henry Fairweather without whom this project would not have happened. Their funding enabled us to distribute 95% of our masks for free, and they encouraged and aided our efforts every step of the way. During strict lockdown, we managed to secure permits for upholstery and interior design businesses, to morph into mask making enterprises. Alongside this, we had about 90 home sewers under the leadership of Berry Pren ce and Stephanie Seydack. These sewing machine warriors transformed their sewing tables into mask making wonderlands. A special men on goes to the reless Rosy Witzmann, who single handedly produced 6000 masks. We are grateful to the Knysna community who donated material, elas c and even 2 sewing machines that were gi ed to the project. Once our teams had discussed the best and safest designs for the masks, we set about establishing channels for distribu on. We partnered with soup kitchens, feeding schemes, taxi associa ons, community clinics, re rement homes, and both provincial & private hospitals. We also supplied all the doctors’ surgeries so people could access free masks at any of these points. We have hundreds of photographs documen ng the end result of people wearing their beau ful masks.
