TACT CAN BE TRICKY IT is not easy being tac ul when you cannot speak the other person’s language.

Par cularly difficult when people are being kind, but you really don’t want what they are offering, yet have none of those well-oiled words you can rely on in your own language to deal with an awkward situa on without giving offence.

Back in my 20s a friend and I were backpacking on a Greek island and stayed in a room behind the house of a local couple. They could not speak English, we could not speak Greek.

One evening we returned to find a long table in the courtyard laden with food and about 20 people si ng down to eat. They called us over and indicated we should join them. All sorts of delicious Greek dishes were pressed on us, and we scoffed away happily, smiling and nodding to indicate our apprecia on.

Then our host picked up a bowl and offered it to me.

I looked at it and my heart sank. It was chopped octopus tentacles.

Now to understand my revulsion, you need to know two things: first, I cannot stand shellfish, squid or octopus. Not allergic, just hate the taste, the smell and texture.

Second, a dead octopus had been hanging on a nail in the courtyard for two days, but that morning it had disappeared. I realised this was probably it. I had walked by that dead creature several mes trying not to look at it, and now it is was dinner.

What could I do? I had to take a piece not to be impolite. They all watched. I forced my mouth open and felt the tentacles on my tongue. I wanted to gag.

My eyes li ed to the nail where the dead creature had hung. My host followed my gaze and then poin ng at the nail, grinned and nodded.

Aaagh.

You know when you try to swallow but your throat has other ideas?

Eventually I got it down. Their expectant faces were wai ng for my verdict on this special delicacy. How could I be tac ul in sign language?

Tell them while we were delighted to be included in their family meal, and the food was delicious, I actually had a slight aversion to certain seafood. Not possible. So instead I just smiled.

“Ah!” the host clapped his hands delightedly, and scooped more tentacles onto my plate. I could have cried. It took a lot of humus and bread to force them down.

Some people may say: “Ag, why didn’t you just pull a face and shake your head?”

Well, that is the point I started with. They were such a kind couple and I did not want to offend them, but without language there is no tact, so I did what I did.

All these decades later I am glad I made them happy.

Speaking of tact, here is an excellent quote by Benjamin Franklin: “Remember not only to say the right thing in the right place, but far more difficult s ll, to leave unsaid the wrong thing at the temp ng moment.”

The last bit is the hard part, isn’t it?
