Plett’s shipwrecked sailors SAILORS regard the South African coast as one of the most treacherous in the world because of our stormy weather, and the coastline is li ered with shipwrecks. One that captured my imagina on was the Portuguese sailing ship São Gonzales that sank off Ple enberg Bay in 1630. She was one of 33 ships that sank in South African waters between 1505 and 1796 – roughly nine a year. Many others simply disappeared without a trace. The São Gonzales was on her return voyage from India to Portugal when she developed leaks. In order to repair her, the captain anchored at Bahia Formosa, the Portuguese mariners’ name for Ple . But the seas were wild and the ship started to sink. Of the 250 people on board, 150 drowned. You may have guessed where I found this account: in Winnie Tapson’s book Timber and Tides. “The remaining hundred managed to get ashore through the wild surf,” writes Tapson, “but how they managed to keep themselves alive on the desolate sand dunes is not recorded. Perhaps, like strandlopers of old, they learned how to feed on the provender of the sea and the rocks.” But here is the astonishing bit: not only did these 100 shipwrecked sailors survive, they also built two boats. They may have salvaged wood and sails and tools from the wreck, no one knows. Once their boats were complete, they had to decide in which direc on to sail. I imagine them si ng on the beach, discussing it: east towards what is now Maputo, or west towards Table Bay? Both were places where passing sailing ships anchored to get fresh water and where they might be rescued. In the end one boat headed east and reached Mozambique safely, 1600km away. Tapson does not say where they went from there, but I imagine they waited for a passing ship to anchor and take them on board. The other boat sailed west to Table Bay where they were taken on board the São Ignacio de Loyalo, bound for Portugal. They must have been ecsta c. This is the bit I can’t bear: the ship was in sight of Lisbon, when tragedy struck. It was wrecked crossing the bar and everyone on board perished, in sight of their homeland. Before the sailors le Ple , Tapson writes that they had erected a stone on the sand dunes that said: “Here was lost the ship São Gonzales. Year 1630. They made two boats.” Two hundred years later, people searching for “treasure” from the shipwreck apparently found the stone, which was taken to the “the Cape Town Museum” in 1860. Tapson writes that an Owen Grant “who came to own the land upon which it stood at a place he called The Sanctuary, put up a replica. On this he inscribed the words: ‘This is a replica of the original stone removed in 1860 to the Cape Town Museum. The original stone, so it is said, stood on a sand hill 3 miles south of Ple enberg Village. There is reason to assume this is the actual spot.’” I wonder if it is s ll there?
