At dawn on Monday 22nd June 2020, Deborah MacMillan quietly slipped away to join her Father, John and her beloved Son, Jonathon.

Debs was extremely well known in Knysna, and much loved by so many people – the hundreds of Posts on Facebook pay testament to her popularity.

More recently she was known for establishing “Blend” as the go-to place for fun, friends and live Music; her Staff became Family and she took great pride in the Venue.

She will be sorely missed by Family and Friends.

Her Mother, Mildred Lythgoe, survives her and her words are simple but heartfelt…. “she was the very best Daughter anyone could ever have and I loved her more than I can say. The loss is almost too great to bear.”

There will be a gathering at some stage in the future for everyone to pay their respects and share memories.

Knysna’s Gold Rush Looking at the Knysna lagoon now it is hard to imagine it once had a func oning harbour where old sailing ships offloaded goods brought from afar, and sailed away with cargoes of mber from the forests.

It is also hard to imagine that Beacon Isle at Ple enberg Bay, now the site of a glitzy hotel, was once a smelly whaling sta on, where whale blubber was boiled in huge pots for whale oil.

Or that not far from Rheenendal a gold-rush mining town sprang up in Millwood Forest, where hundreds of diggers, some from as far afield as Australia, Cornwall and California, established claims and panned for gold.

These were some of the fascina ng tales in Winifred Tapson’s book Timber and Tides: the story of Knysna and Ple enberg Bay. It is an old book, published in 1961, which I found while searching for Lockdown reading ma er.

Uninten onally, the book also gives insight into the dated social and poli cal views of the author, born in the late 1800s.

I loved the story of Millwood mining town. Part of its fascina on is that this vibrant li le town sprung up in a couple of years and then disappeared almost as quickly, leaving nothing to show it had existed.

Knysna’s gold rush began a er a farmer called Hooper from Ruigtevleiwent wandering around a riverbed in 1876 searching for grit to feed his two ostriches. He found a “pebble” which turned out to be a gold nugget.

Hooper, with Osborne, a government roads engineer building the Lakes Road to George, were given a £100 grant from the then Cape Government for further inves ga on.

“Diggers poured into Knysna by land and sea and rushed off to stake their claims.”

By 1885 there were 200 diggers living in tents in the Millwood Forest, scared to venture out at night because of the elephants.

By the end of 1886 the tents began to be replaced by wooden houses. The Main Street had four hotels and boarding houses and six shops.

That year Millwood got its first newspaper, the Millwood Sluice Box, soon followed by two others: the Millwood Eaglet and the Millwood Cri c.

By 1888 there were 1000 people living at the goldfields and gold had been found at 40 claims.

“Young men went about firing off revolvers just for the fun of it, making an intolerable nuisance of themselves.”

A post cart drawn by oxen ran three mes a week between Knysna and Millwood up such a bad road that the 23km trip took five hours.

There was a concert on Saturdays at the Royal Music Hall in S nk Street with “highland flings, comic and sen mental songs”. Admission was free, but if you wanted coffee and buns, you paid a shilling.

By late 1888 the gold was becoming scarce and Millwood started to pack up. By 1900 there was nothing le of the gold rush town, which had become “a place of ghosts and echoes, and the tumbled graveyard was about all that was le to tell of the life that once flourished there.”
