CONGRATULATIONS TO Knysna Municipality for its excellent work in helping feed 5,400 households that have been hit by the Covid-19 lockdown. Knysna was the first municipality in the Garden Route District to spend its R550,000 provincial government grant on food relief - in just three days. Under acting municipal manager Dr Michele Gratz, officials worked into the night to buy, pack and distribute food parcels. There are still over 15,000 applications for relief that have to be verified, so the municipality is appealing for donations to continue - particularly to Knysna Rotary who work with the municipality. “This is a disaster that will have an effect on each one of us on different levels,” Dr Gratz said. “Please try to stay positive and help where you can. at Action Ads hen I read Knysna Municipality’s latest newsle er I cheered – and then a bit further on I felt dispirited. Cheered because the municipality has done a good job in ge ng food to hungry people who have lost jobs and income in the lockdown. To date it has helped 5,400 households. Then I read that garden services could now apply for permits to clear overgrown areas that may be harbouring “pests like rats and snakes”. Oh my. Poor snakes. Such an old-fashioned and, well, uninformed view. We know rats can carry diseases. They have mul plied and the natural balance has pped, largely because we generate huge amounts of food waste that is not always well managed. But snakes? How are they “pests?” It seems all over the world people’s first reac on is to kill them. One understands fear of snakes because some are venomous, but surely by now we have learned that if you leave snakes alone, they will leave you alone? Besides, if there were more snakes, there would be fewer rats. Snakes are a necessary part of the natural environment and as their numbers shrink, so rodents increase. That made me think of a short video that came into my inbox yesterday: How Wolves Changed Rivers. It is set in Yellowstone Na onal Park and illustrates how li le we really know about the func oning of the natural world. It tells the story about what happened a er wolves were reintroduced into Yellowstone in 1995 a er an absence of 70 years. With no wolves, the deer had mul plied and over me they had grazed some of the vegeta on to almost nothing. A er wolves were introduced they began killing some deer, but more significantly, they changed the behaviour of the deer. Deer began to avoid certain parts of the park like valleys and gorges where there was a greater risk of their being trapped by wolves. That gave plants in these areas a chance to rejuvenate, and some trees grew five mes in size in just six years. Valleys became forested again. The trees a racted birds and beavers, which the movie calls “ecosystem engineers” because they create niches for other species to live. Beaver dams a racted o ers, muskrats, ducks, fish, rep les and amphibians. The wolves also killed coyotes, so the number of rabbits and mice increased. This in turn swelled the number of hawks, weasels, badgers, foxes and eagles. Bear numbers grew because there were more berries to eat. But the movie says the really startling discovery was that wolves changed the behaviour of rivers. They meandered less, the channels narrowed and there was less erosion. The regenerated forests had stablised the banks, and the roots held the soil. “So the wolves,” the narrator says, “though small in number, transformed not just the ecosystem of Yellowstone Na onal Park, but also its physical geography.” Allowing snake numbers to increase would of course not have such a drama c effect, as they don’t occupy the same sort of niche. But as a start it would help bring Knysna’s rat and mice popula on under control – and who knows what other hidden linkages in the natural world might be restored?

Masks4Knysna wishes to thank all the incredible sewing machine warriors who con nue to donate their me and crea vity to masking Knysna. So far, these wonderful women and men have produced 10 000 masks. These masks have been given away to all our community clinics, to the provincial hospital staﬀ & pa ents, taxi drivers & commuters. They have also been given to many soup kitchens around Knysna and to the ePAP feeding scheme. The GP’s and specialists have received many hundreds of masks for themselves and their pa ents. The masks have also been given to Loeriehof, Vermont, Garden Gates & Leisure Gardens care homes, as well as to Epilepsy Founda on and to many schools. We con nue to tuck them into the food parcels that are being distributed through Rotary, Municipality and many private ini a ves.
