T was a concert “of the people, by the people, for the people” – and what a jol it was. It was the annual Concert in the Park in Kalk Bay, held for the 20th year running to raise funds to maintain the tiny local park. Some Garden Routers who did the “Argus” cycle tour last Sunday may even have been there, as the concert is always held on the cycle race day. And perhaps it is something you can take back to your own communities to emulate. From one perspective it is simply a fun day of live music, sitting on the grass drinking a beer, or dancing in front of the stage where the bands are giving it stick. From another perspective it is an example of what a community can do with a bit of leadership, hard work, and that essential ingredient of getting off one’s butt and doing something instead of complaining. The Kalk Bay Concert in the Park goes back 20 years. It is a tiny park, but very well used. There are swings and other playground equipment, a lawn with a big tree where people come to picnic, have children’s parties, drink their take-away coffees, walk their dogs and just generally chill. It was not always like that. Twenty years ago it was a neglected spot with knee-high grass, broken bottles, rubbish and dog poo. Then one of the locals went to Judy Herbert, a Kalk Bay stalwart who was organising a street clean-up at the time. “The park was a real tip, and all the play equipment was broken,” Judy said. She asked city council what they could do to help. The council’s finances meant they could cut the grass only every eight weeks, and they could fix and paint the swings etc, but that was about it. So Judy rolled up her sleeves and got the community involved. “If there is a problem, I get it sorted. Get people together and just do it.” After weeks of blood sweat and tears, the park was transformed into a place where people wanted to go. “We wanted to celebrate so I said facetiously ‘let’s have a concert in the park’, and everyone went for it.” It started small for the first few years, with “some local guitarists we almost pulled off the streets”. Then Kenneth from Olympia Café said they needed a sound system. Then food on sale. And dop. And before you knew it, the concert had grown into one of the local “must-go-to” events. It’s a lot of work, with plenty of donations of time and effort from the community, and sponsorship from local businesses. And the bands play free. The annual concert is more than just a fun event. The money raised has paid for many park improvements, and also pays a formerly unemployed man to work as the park gardener. It has become sustainable. I admire people like Judy, who see a problem no one else is sorting out, so knuckle down and do it themselves. Maybe we should send her to Eskom.
