walked into a friend’s house at the weekend and was captivated by a scene on their television of a man standing in a forest surrounding by thousands of butterflies.

“What’s this about?”

We turned up the sound and heard the sad tale. He was Homero Gomez Gonzalez, a Mexican environmental activist, who had fought for 10 years to protect a forest in Mexico’s Michoacan state where millions of monarch butterflies migrate from North America every winter to hibernate in the warmer Mexico. That is an astonishing 3200km journey for those tiny wings.

Because the numbers of monarch butterflies are dwindling, Gomez Gonzalez had fought to save this forest, and in November managed to get the area declared a sanctuary, a World Heritage Site. It was primarily to save the butterflies, but also part of a strategy to stop illegal logging in the forest.

And now he was dead, murdered.

According to news agencies, Gomez Gonzalez disappeared in mid-January. His family was worried as he had received threats from the illegal loggers. Then last week his body was found floating in a well. He had suffered a blow to the head before drowning. The authorities are treating it as murder.

Reports suggest that it was because of his stand against illegal logging that he became a target.

What I find chilling are reports that the authorities questioned 53 police officers from surrounding municipalities in connection with his death.

Gomez Gonzales was doing far more than just saving butterflies. In effect he was protecting hundreds of thousands of plants, animals, insects – and vital ecological processes on which humans depend.

Forests are disappearing fast. According to WWF between 1990 and 2015 the world lost 129 million hectares of forest, an area the size of South Africa.

Forests are not just pretty, shady spots. The world needs forests for their priceless ecological “services”, such as the air that we breathe, or absorbing harmful, climate-changing greenhouse gases, providing clean water, preventing soil erosion and giving a home to 80% of the world’s land-based plants and animals.

Forests provide foods, cosmetics, paper, timber, and jobs for 13 million people. Of course forests have to be used sustainably, at a rate at which they can regenerate. Otherwise you are simply killing the goose that lays the golden egg.

That is what the illegal loggers are doing – cutting down trees at an unsustainable rate.

Interestingly, Gomez Gonzalez was born into a logging family, but according to the Washington Post, he convinced people to stop logging and protect butterfly habitats instead, “figuring tourism would replace the lost income”.

He was not the only victim. On Saturday the body of a second man was found: Raul Hernandez Romero, a tour guide in the butterfly reserve. He was bruised and had a stab wound to his head.

In some countries, citizens who stand up to protect the natural environment – on which society and the economy depend – do so without consequences.

In others, like Mexico, they risk losing their lives.

The murder of Gomez Gonzalez is a loss not only to his family and to the Mexican people. It is a loss for all of us.
