THE FACE OF HOSPICE Such care goes into our local community.

Today day care for Knysna patients began again for the new year.

Staff fetch those patients well enough from home and bring them to our Knysna Sedgefield Hospice office/home.

Here we have a wonderful group of volunteers who have planned various activities for the morning with another group of volunteers who provide sandwiches or soup on a regular basis.

This gives the care givers at home some time off and the patient a change of scenery.

We have three local groups Knysna, Rheenendal and Sedgefield.

Locals caring for Locals in the true sense of the word.

HE news that 17 lions and tigers had been rescued from a circus in Guatemala and released into South Africa got me thinking about circuses, and I remembered a story I had heard in Groot Marico.

It was back in 1984 while I was doing a feature on the people of Groot Marico, a small town made famous by the writer Herman Charles Bosman.

I was told that there were many people in Groot Marico with the surname Van Staden. This caused confusion, so the townsfolk gave some of them nicknames. One fellow was nicknamed “Oom Sirkus” van Staden.

The story goes that when Van Staden was a lad, the circus came to Groot Marico. There was great excitement, but not everyone had the money to go to the circus. However, this youngster had a plan.

He had spied that the circus tent had a hole at the top, so he climbed up to the top of the tent, peered through the hole and watched the performance free.

He was watching a clown on the trapeze artists’ ladder, when the clown looked up and spotted him. The clown had a popgun with him, and the temptation must have been great, so he took aim and shot. The cork hit young Van Staden smack on the forehead.

Van Staden was familiar with guns, but popguns were unknown to him.

When he heard the bang and felt the impact, Van Staden believed himself to be mortally wounded. With a cry he slid down the tent shouting: “Ek is geskiet, ek is geskiet!”

The lad was fine of course, but forever after he was known as “Sirkus” van Staden.

Another tale they told was how they had been caught stealing mampoer, the homemade peach brandy with a mighty kick that Groot Marico is famous for.

When there was a party or a dance, the men would take their bottles of mampoer with them, hide them in the long grass outside, coming out now and then for a swig. After many swigs it could become tricky to find your bottle in the dark, so the men would pick up a handful of gravel and toss it in the direction of where they thought their bottle was, and listen for the telltale “ping” as the gravel hit glass.

One night three boys watched where one man had hidden his bottle, and stole it. They were drinking away merrily when the bottle owner came out and bent down to pick up some gravel.

They knew what came next and they knew they were in trouble.

With the bottle in their hands, there would be no telltale “ping” of gravel on glass.

However, one of the lads had a plan: As the man threw the gravel, he called out: “Ping!”

Well, the game was up and the lads got a beating.

Then there was the man I chatted to who said he did not like the Herman Charles Bosman books.

“Why not?” I asked.

“Because he wrote that people in Groot Marico don’t wear socks and that’s not true.”
