tarted the New Year with some human/wildlife conflict here at the family holiday house. A big issue globally, but ours was small: mice. There were mice droppings everywhere, even inside the stove. There were teeth marks on the soap and mice poo in my bed. My brother shook out his duvet and sent a mouse flying. Some gnawed through plastic containers to get at food. I am happy to live with a bit of wildlife in the house, but like most humans, I have a threshold of tolerance. Mine was when I found teeth marks on my cell phone charger. Suddenly I realised that the Wi-Fi, the landline and the solar electrics could all fall prey to those rodents’ gnashers, and what an expense and palaver to get someone out to the beach to fix it. We all agreed the mice must go, but not how to do it. We did not even consider rat poison because of the damage it does up the food chain if birds or other animals feed on the dead mice. Besides, it causes a painful death. I was happy to use my sister Julie’s modified mousetrap that kills instantly. However two members of the household did not want any mice to die, so Julie came up with a clever invention: a disc of cardboard with slashes radiating from the centre, taped over a bucket, and peanut butter near the centre as bait. To the mouse the cardboard looks solid, but as soon as it steps on the slashed sections to get the grub, it falls into the bucket. I woke around 3am with a mouse in the bucket. I put a dinner plate on top so it could not escape, and went back to sleep. Early the next morning we discussed where to release it. They say you need to take a mouse at least 5km away otherwise it will simply return. In the end we decided to release it into the nearby Sinclair Nature Reserve. True, it was only about 400m away across the beach, but with gulls and buzzards and no cover, I hoped it would not hazard a trip back across the sand. The point of this tale is that it is a small version of a big problem. As the human population grows enormously, the land for wildlife shrinks, and the human/wildlife conflict becomes worse. The UN’s IPBES report last year said nature was declining at rates unprecedented in human history, with one million plants and animals threatened with extinction. We are also eroding our ecosystems on which we depend. Not too late to stop this the report says, but it will mean doing things radically differently on all levels, from technology to the economy. A fundamentally different way of living. Catching a mouse in a bucket instead of killing it will not change the world, but it is an example of the kind of creative thinking we need if we are going to find solutions to living in this world sustainably. As they say, this is all we have. There is no planet B.
