“Happy new year!” you cheered as you cracked the bottle of bubbly. “And this year I am definitely going to lose weight, exercise more, eat healthier, quit smoking, get organised, cut down on alcohol and spend less!”

Sound familiar? Well, apparently that is because these are among the top 10 resolutions people make every New Year.

Come mid-February, most people have dumped their resolutions.

Researchers say this is often because people make ones that are too vague, reflecting a general desire, not a specific goal. People also make resolutions without thinking about what steps they will take to achieve them.

Many online articles give advice on how to stick to the resolutions, for instance by making them specific, realistic and time-bound: “I will lose 3kg by the end of March and this is my written plan of how I will do this.

I rather liked an article in the Daily Mail that gave a different take on resolutions. It quoted a life coach who said instead of making New Year resolutions to change, rather decide to make the most of who you are right now.

One of her tips is to look for your special “ingredient X” – the one quality about you that stands out. That may be your best strength or characteristic – build on it and enjoy it.

Another is to accept that you will probably encounter many circumstances and people in the new year that you cannot change, but you can decide that this year you will choose how to respond to these in a way that makes life better for you.

Her tip I liked best was: “Change the ‘I should be doing’ into ‘why do I have to?’ – and wave goodbye to the pressure to keep up and conform.”

Then there was the little girl who gave yet another take on new year resolutions in a video clip that has been doing the rounds. (I really don’t like all these videos of kids parroting scripts written by adults. Why do people think children are more charming if they imitate grown-ups for goodness sake?)

But this time the adult scriptwriters made some points worth repeating. One was that people seem to assume that New Year is the only time to make changes, yet of course it is not.

Another is: “Will you change? Maybe, but it probably won’t be in one big moment, it will happen in 1000 other little moments: every time you choose to forgive or be grateful; every little moment you choose what is right instead of what is easy; faith instead of doubt; love instead of hate. That’s the way change happens.”

The cynic in us can dismiss these as a bit cheesy, and they are in a way, but that does not necessarily make them any less true.

The New Year’s quote I like best is from Albert Einstein: “Learn from yesterday, live for today, hope for tomorrow.”
