Next scene is a TV journalist standing in front of the twisted carriages with ambulances in the background saying: “Early reports are that the train was derailed because the extreme summer heat buckled the tracks. This comes after railway officials warned that the UK railway system could no longer cope because of climate change. They have urged the public not to travel by train while the heat wave carries on.”

Bit far-fetched? No one would believe the movie plot? Well, they would be wrong.

This week I learned that during heat wave in the UK in July, trains were forced to slow down to 32km/h because of the risk of tracks buckling in the heat and causing trains to derail. So it is for real.

In the summer of 2018 – the hottest summer ever recorded in the UK - more than 1 000 trains were cancelled in Scotland alone because of the sky-high temperatures. Commuters really were asked not to travel if possible.

Just last week the head of Scotland’s railway really did say Britain’s railways could no longer cope because of climate change. They needed to invest massively to build railway tracks that could withstand temperatures of 40C. Currently UK rails are built to stress levels of 28C. If anyone had told me 20 years ago about railway tracks in the UK buckling from heat waves, I would have thought they were mad. Today, hearing about this really brings home what the world is up against – and that is just one impact.

So I am really angry with Trump, who formally told the UN last week that he was pulling out of the Paris Agreement that nearly 200 countries have signed, pledging to reduce their greenhouse gas emissions - as did the US under Obama. Now Trump is saying we’ve changed our minds.

Trump is not the brightest, true, but to pooh-pooh climate change as a hoax when thousands of scientists have shown the world the hard facts time and time again, must surely be one of the doffest things any head of state can do.

And we in South Africa are not squeaky clean either, with our politicians saying: “We must burn coal because it is there.” Oh please. We are already one of the highest per capita greenhouse gas emitters in the world. Why not say: “We must use wind and sun power – because it’s there.”

It’s easy to feel despondent, but then I think of Gandhi saying: “Be the change you wish to see in the world.”

And when I lug my recycling out, I remind myself that recycling paper uses 40% less energy than making new paper; recycling plastic uses 70% less energy and recycling cans and metal uses 95% less.

So is my weekly bag of recycling going to stop climate change?

No, obviously. But imagine the effect if 7 billion people did.”
