esterday I held a letter in my hands that was a hundred and three years old.

Blowing off the dust I read the words that Larry Metelerkamp, my grandfather’s older brother, had written to his sister Susie on 28 November 1916. It was World War 1. He writes nothing about the horrors of war, but I assume he had been wounded as he says he was “back in camp” after his convalescence.

It was quite eerie. Here was the actual paper that he had held as a soldier in the First World War. I never knew Larry or Susie, also called Sanni. My grandfather was the second youngest of 12 children so most of the great aunts and uncles had died by the time I arrived on the scene.

Susie Metelerkamp was a journalist on the Cape Argus in the early 1900s, writing a column under the name “Lady Peggy”.

And what an interesting life even this small bundle of letters reveals.

I was intrigued by the letter in 1921 from the “Diocesan Home for Friendless Girls” in Cape Town who thanked “Lady Peggy and members of the Cape Argus staff” for a donation of £2.10.

And I wanted to know more about the friend from Surrey, who wrote in 1928 that her solicitors had established that her husband was now living in Peru, and they would need more money to gather evidence to start divorce proceedings. She wrote: “Oh for the old days, for the cakes and ale of easy living!

And for one of those simple, earnest, decent sort of men that I didn’t marry but wish I had.”

Then there was the letter from the assistant general manager of the SA Railways and Harbours who wrote in 1922 that he had pleasure in arranging “comfortable accommodation” on Sunday’s train from Cape Town to George, adding: “You may use this letter as your authority for having your typewriter in your compartment with you.”

A letter sent from Basingstoke in England in 1915 was addressed simply to: “Miss Sanni Metelerkamp, Cape Town, South Africa” - and it got there. Not sure who received it, but whoever did forwarded it to Susie who was then living in London – all for the price of one penny.

There were plenty of invitations she had kept, including one from General Smuts to a function to meet “Her Royal Highness Princess Alice”.

There were lots of pamphlets from stories she must have covered, including the Women’s Enfranchisement League in 1916 and the International Congress of Women in Amsterdam in 1915.

I liked Lady Hely Hutchinson’s letters. She ends one on a chatty note about going to the garden party at Buckingham Palace, adding that she doubted the king would be well enough to attend, so they would have to make do “with the Queen and the P of W.” These letters made me wonder how much of our communications will be left for our generation’s greatgrandchildren to discover, as so much of our interaction today is on email or social media that will disappear into the ether.

Funds raised are used specifically for care and support programmes for cancer patients and those affected by cancer.

Through the success of the 2018 Pink Tree's campaign, CANSA was able to purchase a variety of medical equipment that our patients need while receiving treatment and fighting cancer.

Purchase the signature pink material @ R30 per metre or a stunning Doek and show your support. “Doek with a difference” is an exciting way for the business sector to become involved to make a difference in the cancer communities of South Africa. The head wraps or scarves are sold for R70 each. They are also available in green. Pink fabric and Doeks are available at all CANSA Care Centres country-wide (https://www.cansa.org.za/cansa-carecentres-contact-details/). It is the support of this wonderful campaign that has allowed CANSA to do even more for their patients.
