was breathing heavily up the mountain track, a three-day rucksack on my back.

Had I really packed filter coffee and a glass plunger? And that extra pot so my coffee would not taste like two-minute noodles? Should have dumped them, I thought as I puffed up the Swartberg Hiking Trail. “Tea time!” called out one of the other hikers and I stopped and turned – and immediately forgot my heavy pack and the steep path. There before me was the most spectacular view, one rugged mountain range after another, disappearing into the blue distance. I sat on a rock and drank it all in. How lucky we are to live in South Africa where we still have accessible wilderness. How great that CapeNature conserved this piece. The trail is in the Swartberg Nature Reserve, between the Little and Great Karoo, where it can snow in winter and reach temperatures of over 40 C in summer. Our October weather was perfect. The fynbos was beautiful, with grasses and restios and flowers of deep blue, bright pink, yellow and coral. “Everyone saddled up? Let’s go.” Tightening my hip belt I walked on, my breathing now in rhythm with my footsteps. I get into a kind of a meditative state where everything seems calm and right. When we reached the top we had a 360-degree view of the world: mountains to the south and to the north, ravines, rugged peaks and gentle bushy slopes. The Botha’s Hoek hut was charming, freshly painted with a stoep, a braai (you had to carry up your firewood, so that was a non-starter) and three rooms with bunk beds. And a shower and flush loos! There was a solar geyser, but although we could see steam coming from the overflow pipe, nothing came out of the hot water tap. There is no water on the trail, so we were a little concerned when the taps in the hut ran dry the next day. We found the header tank was empty, so we climbed onto the lower rainwater tank and dipped in a billy to fill our water bottles. With the loo, you had a choice: use it and spend a long time filling the cistern, or use the bush and take your loo paper home with you. The hike should go to Ou Tol hut for the second night, back to Botha’s Hoek the third night and back down the fourth day, but the Ou Tol hut is closed, apparently for renovations. Pity. So the second day we hiked a few hours along the lovely route to Ou Tol, and hiked back to sleep at Botha’s Hoek. The next morning we hiked back down to the cars. The evenings were wonderful. After supper, most people went to bed early, and for a while I was alone to savour the night. The veld was utterly silent, shining silver in the moonlight. It was an experience that fills the soul. As Thoreau said: “We can never have enough of nature…. We need the tonic of the wilderness.”
