Sometimes people say odd things.

We all do occasionally, and I am sure most of us remember making a faux pas by saying the wrong thing. The words just pop out and then seem to hang in a cartoon bubble above your head while people stare at you.

Luckily just a few people hear our silly remarks, but I feel a little sorry for famous people whose remarks are amplified in the media for the whole world to chortle over. Unkind, but sometimes one can't help laughing.

Former US president George W Bush was a good one for that: Take his version of the old saying: “Fool me once, shame on you. Fool me twice, shame on me.” Bush’s version was: “There’s an old saying in Tennessee – I know it’s in Texas, probably in Tennessee – that says: ‘Fool me once, shame on you, shame on you. Fool me – you can’t get fooled again.”

And when Bush beat his opponent to become US president, he famously told the world: “They misunderestimated me.”

Closer to home, I remember as a child filing out of St George’s Church after the Christmas service, when the neighbour from the next-door holiday beach house came to wish my mother Merry Christmas. She looked at him blankly, and then exclaimed: “Oh, I didn’t recognise you with your clothes on!”

No shenanigans were being revealed. She was just used to seeing him in nothing but his Speedo from dawn to dusk.

And I love remembering some of the odd sayings of Action Ads’ own dear Hanlie. Being Afrikaans speaking from the Free State, when she first came to Knysna she still was brushing up on her English.

One evening she sat down to dinner with a Catholic friend who said: “Let’s say grace.”

Funds raised are used specifically for care and support programmes for cancer patients and those affected by cancer.

Through the success of the 2018 Pink Tree's campaign, CANSA was able to purchase a variety of medical equipment that our patients need while receiving treatment and fighting cancer.

Purchase the signature pink material @ R30 per metre or a stunning Doek and show your support. “Doek with a difference” is an exciting way for the business sector to become involved to make a difference in the cancer communities of South Africa. The head wraps or scarves are sold for R70 each. They are also available in green. Pink fabric and Doeks are available at all CANSA Care Centres country-wide (https://www.cansa.org.za/cansa-care-centres-contact-details/). It is the support of this wonderful campaign that has allowed CANSA to do even more for their patients.
