IF 'YES', READ ON! UKUWELA CAN HELP! Ukuwela is an employment program for learners with disabilities from the Carpe Diem School in George. Carpe Diem is a government school and accommodates learners with physical and/or intellectual disabilities, as well learners on the autistic spectrum. Learners come from the Southern Cape coastal region ranging from Plettenberg Bay to Albertinia.

Ukuwela is an isiXhosa word which means to 'cross over' and was initiated in 2017 to address the high unemployment rate of our school leavers. Ukuwela candidates are evaluated and profiles are compiled reflecting their interests, abilities and skills. Based on these we source employment opportunities in relevant industries. While still in school candidates participate in voluntary work placements with the eye on employment once they leave school. Ukuwela supports candidates throughout the process by means of Job Coaches who spend time with candidates at their places of work to ensure they can do the work and are good workers. Our candidates are testimony to the fact that people with disabilities CAN and WANT to work! To date, we have ten Ukuwela graduates permanently employed in the open labour market with another five participating in work placements and yet another five for whom we are actively seeking placements. Three of our graduates have received 'Vasbyt' Awards for completing their first year of work and are still going strong! One of them is Knysna resident, Cheswin Grootboom, who works remotely from home for Click-on-it doing data capturing.
