Letter to the editor, VERMONT NURSING HOME IN HORNLEE. I am 74 yrs old, have rheumatoid arthritis which stopped me working. Since December 2018 I have been a resident of Vermont Centre, catering for old age and people needing frail care.

All 52 residents are on government pensions or grants. resultantly there collective contribution being +- 80% of said grant does not nearly cover the cost of the required care. In most cases this means 24hr care. We have stroke victims who have lost speech, hearing, the use of arms, legs, eyes, some with more than one of these .Imagine going to bed your day planned and waking unable to get up no matter how hard you try!

Bummer! We also are amputees, accident victims paralyzed as a result and the aged, the oldest being an astounding 103 yrs old!

This non profit organization desperately needs help! The only way to really grasp the predicament of these people is to visit Vermont and see first hand. The staff who care for the residents are to say the least saints, they work 12 hr shifts for minimum wages so all about dedication to the residents. Their duties include providing ablutions for most who cannot do so without assistance. They change all bedding on a daily basis ,move people to wheelchairs thence to the dining room where many need to be fed. Medication is dispensed to all residents, floors are cleaned through out the day. At the same time coping with hiccups that develop in the course of every day.

We need help! The state provides some 5% of running costs, all residents are on state pensions or disability grants none being more than 1750 rands per month. 85% of which is allocated to Vermont as board. This comes nowhere near the cost entailed to provide the required care. There is a population of approximately 68 000 people in Knysna. If just half a percent.

5% where to contribute 100 rands per month for one year the difference to the residents would be phenomenal!

So this is a plea from us to you. Of course any donation is vital and will be much appreciated. If you are not in a position to commit yourself then even a one off donation would help. In fact any thing would be a help. You are welcome to visit at any time.
