Our beloved mother, Beryl Tillett (nee Human), passed away peacefully after a courageous battle with cancer, in her Knysna home on March 7, 2019 with her daughters at her side. She was predeceased by her husband of 52 years, Mike Tillett.

Beryl touched so many lives and will be sorely missed. She is survived by her daughters, Kim Peens and Kelly Cochrane who both reside in Florida with their husbands, Shaun Peens and Ivan Cochrane respectively and 4 grandchildren, Tyrone, Courtney, Tanna and Cameron. A Celebration of Life was held on March 12th at Holy Trinity Belvidere.

“CLIMATE KIDS” CALL FOR CHANGE - Melanie Gosling School children around the world will stage a school strike on Friday March 15 and take to the streets in a united call for governments to take action to tackle climate change.

They have been dubbed “the climate kids” and they are a fast-growing movement, staging protest marches and rallies to call on governments to cut greenhouse gas emissions fast and to stop “stealing our future”.

Friday's worldwide protest was inspired

by Sweden's 16-year-old climate activist Greta Thunberg, who rose to fame after boycotting classes to sit outside the Swedish parliament for three weeks in August last year in protest against lack of government action to cut greenhouse gas emissions.

Thunberg, who has since been on a school strike every Friday, triggered a movement around the world where thousands of school children now cut classes on Fridays in protest against what they say is lack of action from governments to curb climate change.

One of the placards at a recent protest said: “We are missing our lessons to teach you a lesson.”

One of their objections is that adults not curbing emissions means children will inherit a hotter world, with more extreme weather, water shor tages, species extinction, failures in food production and more frequent floods and droughts.

In Cape Town between 500 and 2000 school pupils plan to gather outside parliment, with another protest at the Union Buildings in Pretoria and at the Civic Centre in Bellville.

The South African climate kids say climate change must be “a priority” in the 2019 e l e c t i o n c a m p a i g n . T h ey w a n t a moratorium on all new coal, oil and gas licences and 100% electricity generation from renewable energy by 2030.

Thunberg has said that tackling climate change is so simple that “even a small child can understand it”: cut greenhouse gas emissions radically and fast.

Greta Thunberg has since addressed the UN climate talks in Prague and the World Economic Forum in Davos.

At Davos she told billionaires: “I want you to panic. And then I want you to act. I want you to act as you would in a crisis. I want you to act as if your house is on fire.

Because it is.”

The average global temperature has already increased by 1°C since the Industrial Revolution when the amount of carbon in the atmosphere began to rise from burning coal and oil for industry and transport.

In 2015 governments agreed under the Paris Agreement in to keep global warming to 1.5°C and each government pledged to cut emissions by a specific amount.

But according to the Climate Action Tracker these pledges are so low that we are set on a course for a 3°C increase.

Current business-as-usual policies with no cuts will set us on a path for a 3.3°C to 4.4°C increase.

To put these increases in perspective, the average global temperature difference between today and the last ice-age was only about 5°C. Small numbers can result in massive changes.

Many, including former World Bank economist Nicholas Stern, have called climate change the biggest threat humanity has ever faced.

Secondly, it is not for me to make comment on the redevelopment or upgrading of Woodmill Lane as I no longer own it.

I have looked at the plans and feel that the redesign is in keeping with the protection of the original historical buildings of the centre.

The walkway undercover between the parking and Pick and Pay will be amazing and something which I would have done ultimately. This is not a mall, just an undercover walkway.

The new owners need to put their own stamp on their purchase and I believe that Woodmill will still be Woodmill, the warm heart of Knysna, just a little smarter and shinier and ready for her next 25 years !
