General Assistance (GA) Program
What is General Assistance (GA)? GA is a County-funded program that provides cash assistance to single adults, married couples without dependent children, and emancipated minors.
What are the benefits? The maximum monthly benefit amount is currently $336 for a single adult or emancipated minor and $548 for a couple. SSI application assistance services are available if needed.
Who is eligible? Program eligibility and the amount of assistance are based on a number of factors which include but are not limited to:
• Applicants must be current Alameda
County residents of 15 days or longer.
• The amount of income available
to, or received by, members of the household, will affect the potential benefit amount.
• The value of the household members’
property, other than exempt property, must be below the property limit.
• Non-citizens must establish that they
are legally in the country and have no limitation on their stay. Sponsored noncitizens must have their sponsor provide information about the sponsor’s resources and income.
• There are no restrictions for formerly incarcerated individuals.
Are there time limits? Employable recipients are subject to time-limited GA. Time-limited benefits provide assistance for a maximum of 3 months in a 12-month period. Unemployable recipients are not subject to time limits.
How will I get my benefits? Payments are issued monthly to an Electronic Benefit Transfer (EBT) card.
Are there other services I can access?
• Employment Supports:
Employable GA applicants and recipients who are also receiving CalFresh may participate in the CalFresh Employment & Training Program (CF E&T), which provides a broad range of job-seeking skills.
• Food and Medical Assistance:
GA applicants and recipients may be eligible for CalFresh (food stamps) and Medi-Cal benefits. Both the CalFresh and MediCal programs have separate application and eligibility requirements.
