What documents do I need?

A worker will tell you exactly what is needed.

If you bring the following items to your appointment, your case may be processed more quickly. If you don’t have these documents, we may be able to help you get them.

Here are some examples of documents you may need to provide for your intake appointment for each person in your household who needs assistance: • Birth certificate or other document verifying age and family relationship • Social Security card or verification of application • Driver’s License or other picture I.D. • Verification of residency: rent, mortgage receipt, or utility bill • Proof of all income: most current pay stubs, child support, alimony, Social Security award letter, unemployment insurance, disability benefits, and veterans benefits.

Unemployment benefit printouts can be obtained by calling 1-800-300-5616.

• Verification of disability (if applicable) • Current bank statements: checking, savings, credit union, money market, savings bonds, stock certificates, and retirement accounts • Current vehicle registration: car, truck, motorcycle, trailer, motor home, or boat.

Verification of loan balance owed on any vehicle should be provided.

• Pregnancy verification (if applicable) • Immigration status: INS registration card, Green Card, Permanent Resident Card, citizenship verification, or passport

Program Information and Requirements The application process can take 30 to 45 days depending on the program.

You should apply as soon as assistance is needed.

Cash assistance. Both programs also provide employment services.

Single and married adults without dependent minors; minors in some specific circumstances.

Families and individuals.

Individuals who receive SSI/SSP are not eligible for CalWORKs, General Assistance, or County issued Medi-Cal. They receive State issued Medi-Cal with their SSI. Family members in need of assistance, who reside with an SSI recipient, may apply and be eligible for the above programs. An SSI parent may apply for CalWORKs or Medi-Cal for their minor children.

Note: SSI/SSP recipients are eligible for CalFresh, provided all other eligibility criteria are met.

How do you decide if I qualify?

All available income and property for you and your family are considered when determining eligibility. Income can affect the amount of assistance you receive. An eligibility determination for family members will be made and provided to you.

Income can affect what type of assistance you can receive. All income available to you and your family is considered, unless an income exemption is determined. Income AND property will be considered if you are 65 years and older, blind or disabled.

Will my car count?

No.

If you have only one car, it is not considered available property. If you have more cars, they may be considered.

If you own the home you live in, the home’s value will not be counted toward the property limit. If you own additional property that you do not occupy, the value may be counted toward the property limit.

What else should I know?

You must have lived in Alameda County for 15 days prior to application.

GA benefits are a loan that you must repay.

Immediate Need and Homeless Assistance benefits may be available to families experiencing emergency situations.

Expedited Services can provide food assistance for emergencies within 3 calendar days.

You may have a monthly co-pay (also known as Share of Cost) for medical expenses. You may be determined eligible for other health coverage through Covered California requiring premium payments.
