Our stories, our music, our voices.
Date: 22 August 2026, Saturday | Time: 2:00PM Venue: National University of Singapore, Ho Bee Auditorium, UCC
Our stories, our music, our voices. It is with great pleasure that I welcome you to this year’s orchestral showcase, The Sound of Us – Our Stories, Our Music, Our Voices. This annual performance is a much anticipated highlight in our school calendar, where we celebrate musical excellence, creativity and collaboration. Tonight, our talented musicians invite you on a journey through music that reflects the many stories that shape our community. Each performance is more than a collection of notes. It is an expression of identity, passion and shared experience, brought to life through the voices and talents of our students. The Sound of Us reminds us that music is one of the most powerful ways we tell our stories. It connects generations, cultures and traditions, while also giving voice to new ideas and fresh perspectives. From the timeless brilliance of Mozart and Dvořák to contemporary favourites from Wicked, La La Land, anime, K-pop and popular music, tonight’s programme celebrates both the diversity of musical expression and the shared joy that music brings. Guided by the expert leadership of Lim Hao Wei and Francis Tan, our musicians present a programme that reflects both the breadth of their talent and the diversity of today’s musical landscape. Spanning classical masterworks, contemporary favourites, film music, musical theatre, anime, K-pop and popular music, the evening showcases the versatility of every ensemble while celebrating the creativity, collaboration and dedication that have made this performance possible. Together, these varied musical styles come together to reflect the many stories, experiences and voices that make up our school community. This evening is not only a tribute to the extraordinary dedication of our student musicians, but also a celebration of the many people who have supported them along the way. Behind every performance lies the guidance of devoted teachers, the encouragement of families, and the unwavering support of a community that believes in the transformative power of the arts. Your presence tonight affirms the importance of that support. Thank you for joining us as we celebrate The Sound of Us, where every performance reflects the stories we share, the music that inspires us, and the voices that bring our community together.

ACS (INTERNATIONAL) PHILHARMONIC ORCHESTRA
The ACS (International) Philharmonic Orchestra is a vibrant musical community united by a shared passion for excellence, artistry, and collaboration. What started as a modest String Ensemble has now become a full symphony orchestra comprising strings, woodwinds, brass, and percussion, providing students with opportunities to develop their musicianship while experiencing the transformative power of ensemble performance. For fifteen years, the orchestra was led by Maestro Lim Soon Lee, whose artistic leadership established a strong foundation of musical excellence and ensemble culture. Although he retired as conductor last year, his legacy continues as the orchestra builds on that foundation under the guidance of its current conductors. The orchestra reflects the evolution of the school’s instrumental music programme. The String Orchestra, founded 17 years ago, laid the foundation for orchestral music-making at ACS (International). In 2014, a small Flute and String Ensemble evolved into the Wind Band as students from across the brass, woodwind, and percussion sections joined together. Today, these ensembles combine to form the ACS (International) Philharmonic Orchestra, a dynamic and versatile ensemble that performs a diverse repertoire spanning the classical canon, contemporary works, Japanese anime and film music.

Beyond the concert stage, the orchestra aims to broaden students’ musical and cultural horizons. Annual European concert tours have taken the ensemble to renowned venues across France, Austria, Italy, and the Czech Republic, where students have shared their music with international audiences while immersing themselves in the rich artistic heritage of each destination. These experiences foster not only musical growth but also cultural understanding, resilience, and lifelong friendships.
A memorable milestone in the orchestra’s journey was its performance at the Esplanade’s DBS Foundation Outdoor Theatre in February 2025, commemorating ACS (International)’s 20th Anniversary. Against the iconic Marina Bay skyline, the orchestra presented a programme of orchestral classics and beloved film scores, celebrating two decades of the school’s commitment to excellence in education and the arts.
More than an ensemble, the ACS (International) Philharmonic Orchestra is a community where young musicians learn the values of commitment, collaboration, and excellence. Through every rehearsal, performance, and shared musical experience, members discover not only the joy of making music together but also the enduring friendships and memories that define their journey.

CONTEMPORARY SINGERS
The Contemporary Singers bring together students who share a love for singing, contemporary music, and performing together. More than simply preparing songs for the stage, the ensemble aims to nurture each singer’s vocal confidence, musicality, creativity, and sense of belonging. Through regular rehearsals and performances, students learn to listen to one another, blend as an ensemble, express themselves with confidence, and discover the joy of making music together. The group continues to grow through meaningful performance experiences. Earlier this year, the Contemporary Singers had the memorable opportunity to perform at the ACS 140th Anniversary celebration at the National Stadium in February, sharing the stage as part of the wider ACS family. The ensemble is always looking for new opportunities to perform, collaborate, and broaden their musical experiences, with the aim of continuing to nurture young singers and giving them the confidence to find and develop their own voices.

Composer Hidetoshi Satō and Lyricist Neko Oikawa combined elements of pop, jazz, and orchestral influences, making it one of the most recognisable anime songs in Japan and beyond. This wind band arrangement opens our concert with a vibrant tapestry of colour and rhythm, inviting you into an evening of imagination and celebration. Gurenge Music by LiSA | Composed by Kayoko Kusano Gurenge, known as the opening theme of Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba, is a popular song by singer LiSA and composer Kayoko Kusano. The piece captures the strength, determination, and resilience found in overcoming challenges and facing intense battles. The music uses powerful rhythms, expressive melodies and emotional expression to bring the emotions of the story to life, reflecting the passion and spirit of the musicians on stage. Wicked (A collaboration with the Contemporary Singers) Music and lyrics by Stephen Schwartz The popular American musical and film adaptation Wicked reveals the untold story of the witches of Oz through its music and storytelling. As the musical follows the friendship between Elphaba and Glinda, Stephen Schwartz’s composition combines Broadway-style melodies with expressive vocal writing, bringing out the emotions and themes of friendship and courage. Accompanied by our contemporary singers, we invite you into a story filled with emotion, energy and unforgettable melodies.
Percussion Ensemble Helix by Eric Rath This percussion ensemble piece is inspired by the continuous movement and structure of a spiral. Through unique, brooding melodies, the music draws you into a soundscape of mystery and momentum.

Contemporary Singers Riptide by Vance Joy Riptide, by Australian singer-songwriter Vance Joy, is a familiar indie-folk favourite that captures the beauty and complexity of life’s journey. Commonly known for its whimsical storytelling and catchy ukulele melodies, Joy wrote the song in the seaside town of Barwon Heads, where he and his family used to go on holiday. This performance reflects the stories each individual performer brings, weaving their unique experiences into a single, unified voice.
String Orchestra Divertimento in D, K.136 - I. Allegro Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart Divertimento in D Major, composed in 1772 during Mozart’s youth, reflects the elegance and brilliance of the Classical period. The first movement, Allegro, opens with a sense of energy and lightness, with lively melodies that capture the audience’s attention. With its bright orchestration, the piece reflects the spirit and collective energy of the performers, celebrating the joy of music. From the Start Laufey and Spencer Stewart, Arr. Michael Kamuf This piece by Icelandic-Chinese singer-songwriter Laufey blends jazz sensibility with contemporary pop songwriting to gently capture the feeling of falling for someone new before the wounds of the past have fully healed. Co-written with Spencer Stewart, its warm harmonies and relaxed swing rhythm evoke the charm of old-school romance filtered through a modern voice. Por Una Cabeza Carlos Gardel Por Una Cabeza is an iconic tango composed by Argentine composer Carlos Gardel with lyrics by Alfredo Le Pera. Originally written in 1935, it has become one of the most recognisable Argentine tangos and has been in many films. With its passionate melodies, elegant rhythms, and dramatic flair, the music captures both the excitement of love and the bittersweet feeling of longing. We hope you will also enjoy its timeless romance and irresistible energy. Palladio Karl Jenkins Inspired by the 16th-century architect Andrea Palladio, Karl Jenkins’ 1995 composition is a dramatic concerto grosso for string orchestra. Inspired by the math principles inherent in architecture, the piece translates architectural symmetry and mathematical proportion into music. Its iconic first movement, Allegretto, features a relentless, cinematic string ostinato.

Philharmonic Orchestra Selections from American Suite, Op. 98b, Movements I & II Antonín Dvořák Arr. Brendan McBrien American Suite comes from Czech composer Antonín Dvořák, and was written when he was in the United States in the 1890s. Inspired by the landscapes and folk traditions he encountered, the suite blends Dvořák’s unmistakable lyrical style with the spirit of American music. Ranging from graceful melodies to lively dance rhythms, each movement paints a different musical scene, celebrating both discovery and cultural exchange. We hope you’ll enjoy this colourful journey through one of Dvořák’s most distinctive orchestral works. Epilogue (from La La Land )Justin Hurwitz, Arr. D. de la Rosa & Claire Wong This composition plays over the closing scenes of the film La La Land. It imagines the life the two main characters might have shared, in a dreamlike, bittersweet sequence. Amid swelling strings and wistful melodies, you will feel echoes of love, ambition, and paths never taken. Rather than a clear happy ending, this piece closes the story with a quiet, aching sense of possibility. Golden (from KPop Hunters) EJAE & Mark Sonnenblick, Arr. Han Yu Zheng Written by EJAE and Mark Sonnenblick for the hit 2025 animated film KPop Demon Hunters, Golden is a record-breaking, Oscar-winning pop anthem. The song’s message is about embracing your inner flaws. Rather than running from the personal “demons” of insecurity and self-doubt, the song represents the ‘golden’ moment when you stop hiding and find the strength to heal.
